Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear series, recently called Death Stranding 2: On the Beach his “masterpiece” in a new Wired video. He explained that he typically views his latest project as his best work to date while answering fan questions.
When asked about his greatest work, Kojima explained he’s often asked that question. He replied that he always considers his most recent project to be his masterpiece, and in this case, that would be Death Stranding 2.
Throughout the video, he explained different parts of making video games, emphasizing that the ability for players to interact with the game is what makes the medium so special. When asked what defines a “good” game, he said it often comes down to how well the game utilizes this interactivity, along with the passion the developers put into it.
Kojima emphasized the importance of a creator’s passion. He explained that because games are interactive, players should be able to experiment with items and find unexpected uses for them. The goal is to create a sense of freedom where players can discover things on their own and enjoy finding new mechanics – it’s about rewarding that curiosity and letting players think outside the box.
The core idea is that truly great games are made with passion and give players a lot of freedom to explore and use items in creative ways.
A game developer recently asked Hideo Kojima how to create a game with lasting appeal – one players would want to revisit even after finishing it. Kojima explained that a game’s success isn’t just about its story, but also about its world, how it feels to play, and how immersive it is.
He explained that the goal is to create a game players genuinely want to return to. It’s about making them feel compelled to keep playing, even after they stop for the day to go to school or work. The most important thing is that players want to re-enter the game world – a unique space where they can escape their everyday lives and experience things they can’t in reality. That desire to return is essential for a successful game.
During the same interview, Kojima discussed his future projects. When asked if he was interested in exploring new genres, he explained that he’s more focused on creating something entirely new rather than working within existing ones. He mentioned a potential project based in “hard sci-fi,” as he enjoys space settings. He also expressed interest in Westerns or historical dramas, though he acknowledged that those genres are already well-established.
Following the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach earlier this year, Kojima Productions is now developing two new games: a horror title called OD and an espionage game called Physint.
