Why Jinger Duggar Hasn’t Celebrated Christmas With Family in 9 Years

Jinger Duggar Vuolo is counting on making some magical memories this Christmas.

Jinger Vuolo, who appeared on 19 Kids and Counting, shared that she and her husband, Jeremy, haven’t spent Christmas with her family since they got married in 2016. This year, however, they’re traveling to Arkansas to celebrate with her parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar.

On their podcast, Jeremy explained they’re visiting the Duggar family home to experience their Christmas traditions. However, he also revealed that he and his wife haven’t celebrated Christmas with the Duggars in nine years, since their wedding.

As for the reason for their long absence?

Jinger explained to Jeremy that they haven’t celebrated Christmas Day with his family in recent years because that’s the one time everyone is together. They’ve made a tradition of spending Christmas with the Vuolo family instead, prioritizing that time with her husband’s relatives. Jinger and Jeremy share three children: Felicity, 7, Evangeline, 5, and 9-month-old Finnegan.

Meanwhile, they would see Jinger’s relatives during other major milestones.

She said they visit each other frequently, making it simple to travel back and forth. Last year, they returned three times for weddings. While people might notice they miss holiday gatherings, they do make it to many weddings.

Despite releasing her revealing memoir, Becoming Free Indeed, in 2023, Jinger remains connected with her family. The family recently reunited in Texas for a women’s conference, and Jinger shared a rare photo in October with her mother, Michelle, and sisters: Jill Duggar Dillard (34), Jessa Duggar Seewald (33), Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth (28), Johannah Duggar (20), Jennifer Duggar (18), Jordyn-Grace Duggar (17), and Josie Duggar (16).

You know, as someone who follows family dynamics, I understand how tough it can be when distance keeps you from loved ones. I’ve heard Jinger’s really been missing being able to travel home to California for the holidays and spend time with her family during this festive season. It’s a reminder that even with busy lives, those connections are so important.

He observed on the podcast that I’d been feeling particularly sentimental about Christmas, and announced they were going to revisit the topic.

Jinger said she’s thrilled to reconnect with her family, and she’s especially eager to see her eighteen siblings.

She added, “I want our girls to experience a Duggar family Christmas. And I miss it.”

Read on for a guide to the Duggar family tree.

This couple, who fell in love in high school, are now parents to 19 children and grandparents to more than 36 grandchildren.

Michelle remembers accepting Christianity when she was fifteen. One night, Jim Bob was going door-to-door for his Baptist church and was told that a new Christian cheerleader lived at the Ruark house. He went to their door and found Michelle.

Jim Bob and Michelle first met when they invited her to Sunday school at their church, and Jim Bob hoped they could become spiritual mentors to each other – though Michelle didn’t recall the meeting being particularly memorable. A year later, Michelle applied for a job at the frozen yogurt shop owned by Jim Bob’s parents. She remembers in a 2017 birthday post for Jim Bob and celebrating their 33rd anniversary that he approached her at the counter, introduced himself, and was very sweet. She doesn’t remember much of their conversation, except that he eventually worked up the courage to ask her to the junior-senior banquet!

They first met at a dinner held at Shiloh Christian, but Michelle knew they had a special connection when they spent hours talking about the Bible at her parents’ home afterward. As Michelle recalls, that’s when they truly connected. They graduated high school in May 1984 and were married just two months later in July. Michelle was 17, and Jim Bob was 19 at the time.

The couple dedicated themselves to God and each other for the long run.

Jim Bob previously served as a state representative for Arkansas’s sixth district from 1999 to 2002, where he was also vice chair of the House Corrections and Criminal Law Subcommittee. He ran for U.S. Senate in 2002, but didn’t win the primary. He also sought the Republican nomination for the Arkansas State Senate District 35 in 2006, but was unsuccessful.

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are both real estate agents and have long been involved in conservative activism. This has made them both strong advocates for and frequent targets of criticism, particularly surrounding their show, 19 Kids and Counting (originally titled 17 Kids and Counting when it began in 2008).

As of October 2024, they were grandparents of 33 with three on the way.

Josh Duggar, the oldest of the Duggar children, was born on March 3, 1988. Like his parents, he became involved in conservative activism, working with the Family Research Council.

Josh Duggar resigned after police records from 2015 came to light, detailing accusations that he had sexually abused several girls, including his sisters Jessa and Jill, while he was a teenager. In a June interview with Fox News, Jessa defended her brother, claiming the accusations were exaggerated and untrue, and stated she was one of the victims herself.

His wife, Anna Duggar, whom he married on September 26, 2008, in a ceremony shown on the show 19 Kids and Counting, remained supportive, even after he confessed to infidelity.

In 2016, when he began treatment, his parents described it as an important start to his recovery process.

Anna and her husband have seven children: Mackynzie (born October 8, 2009), Michael (born June 15, 2011), Marcus (born June 2, 2013), Meredith (born July 16, 2015), Mason Garett (born September 12, 2017), Maryella Hope (born November 27, 2019), and Madyson Lily (born October 23, 2021). Interestingly, Meredith was born on the same day TLC canceled 19 Kids.

In April 2021, Josh was indicted by a federal court on charges of receiving and possessing child pornography. He initially pleaded not guilty to both charges. However, in 2022, he was convicted on both counts, though the judge later dismissed the possession charge. He received a sentence of 12.5 years in prison.

Soon after Josh arrived, Michelle became pregnant again, but sadly, she lost the baby. While they were still sad about this loss and seeking direction, they were overjoyed to discover they were expecting twins.

It felt like a wonderful gift from God,” she explained. “It was a real encouragement to us. We’re still figuring things out, but it’s quite rare – I breastfeed, and my children are very close in age. I have a baby, then get pregnant again just eight months later. It’s just another unique part of our journey that God has given us.

John-David Duggar and his twin sister Jana Duggar were born on Jan. 12, 1990.

John-David and Abbie-Grace Burnett married on November 3, 2018, after a quick romance and engagement. Although they had been aware of each other for years, they first met in person at a church event in Oklahoma, where Abbie grew up.

They welcomed daughter Grace Annette Duggar on Jan. 7, 2020 and son Charlie Duggar in September 2022.

On their 30th birthday in January 2020, Jana shared a heartfelt message with her brother, John. They had often been asked if they shared a special ‘twin connection’ – that feeling of knowing what the other is thinking or feeling. Jana had always said no, but she explained that when her niece, Gracie, was born, she felt just as much joy as John did. She jokingly concluded that maybe the ‘twin thing’ was actually real!

It’s just so lovely seeing you and Abbie as parents! You both seem like you were born to do this, honestly. And honestly, everything that makes you such a great brother – that kindness and patience – I can already see that’s going to make you an incredible dad. It’s really heartwarming to watch!

Abbie and John-David found out they’re expecting a baby girl at a combined baby shower with Jana in November 2025.

Jana watched eleven of her eighteen siblings get married before she met her husband, Stephen Wissmann. Interestingly, Stephen’s sister, Hannah, is married to Jana’s brother, Jeremiah. Although she sometimes felt frustrated by the wait, Jana believes everything happened according to God’s plan.

Jana recently shared with People magazine that she’s learned to trust that everything happens for a reason, and that God has a plan for everyone. That’s why she’s comfortable with getting married later in life. ‘Everyone’s journey is unique,’ she explained, ‘and if we were all the same, life would be pretty dull!’

Just over a year later, the couple shared that they’re expecting their first baby.

Jill Dillard (born May 17, 1991) met her husband, Derick, in a sweet way that reminded people of her parents’ romance. He visited the Duggar family home in December 2011 while caroling with his church group; he grew up about 45 minutes away.

Jim Bob introduced Jill and Derick, and they quickly connected through emails and video calls. That November, Jill and her father visited Derick in Nepal, and their relationship blossomed. In February 2014, Derick formally asked Jim Bob for Jill’s hand in marriage, and they were married on June 21, 2014. They now have three sons: Israel, born April 6, 2015, Samuel, born July 8, 2017, and Frederick, born July 7, 2022.

In April 2024, Jill announced she had experienced a miscarriage while expecting her and Derick’s first daughter.

In the Amazon Prime Video documentary Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, which debuted in June 2023, Jill and Derick Duggar discussed the controversies and religious beliefs connected to their family.

Jim Bob and Michelle’s fifth child, Jessa Duggar, was born Nov. 4, 1992.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by different approaches to relationships, and Jessa and Ben’s story is a great example! They actually met at church, and Ben began ‘courting’ her back in 2013. For those unfamiliar, courting is a really intentional way of getting to know someone with family involvement and a focus on long-term compatibility. It was a bit of a new concept for many viewers! The Duggar family preferred this method because, unlike traditional dating where couples often spend time alone, courting emphasizes group settings and setting shared goals to see if marriage is the right path. Jim Bob explained it’s about building a foundation based on more than just physical attraction.

Ben asked Jessa’s parents for permission to marry her and proposed in August 2014 – it was then that they first held hands. They married on November 1, 2014. While Jessa was pregnant with their first child, their show, 19 Kids and Counting, was canceled. TLC then aired a special episode featuring Jessa and her sister Jill discussing sexual abuse and raising awareness about the issue. Later that winter, the sisters starred in their own show, Jill and Jessa: Counting On, which eventually became Counting On and included other members of the Duggar family.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the Duggar family for a while now, and it’s been lovely to see Jessa and Ben’s family grow! They welcomed their first son, Spurgeon, back in November 2015, followed by Henry in February 2017. Their daughters, Ivy Jane and Fern, arrived in May 2019 and July 2021, respectively. It was heartbreaking to hear Jessa share that they experienced a miscarriage during the 2022 holidays, but they were blessed again with the arrival of their son, George, in December 2023. It’s a beautiful reminder of life’s ups and downs.

In August 2025, Jessa announced the birth of son Edward.

The sixth Duggar child, Jinger Vuolo, was born Dec. 21, 1993.

Jinger and Jeremy first connected while doing ministry work in Laredo, Texas, and began dating in 2016. They got married on November 5, 2016 – which happened to be Jinger’s nephew Spurgeon’s birthday – and quickly faced speculation about whether they were expecting a baby. It’s hard to avoid overlapping important dates when you’re part of a large family of nineteen children!

In June 2017, on an episode of Counting On, Jinger shared that she and her family planned to continue living in Laredo and serving God in whatever way they could.

Oh my goodness, I was SO thrilled when I found out Jinger and Jeremy were expecting again in May 2018! It broke my heart to hear about the miscarriage she’d had the previous fall, though. But then, the BEST news ever! Their sweet Felicity arrived on July 19, 2018, and she’s just the cutest! And then, another little blessing! November 2020 brought Evangeline Jo into the world, and I honestly couldn’t be happier for them. They’re such a beautiful family!

Son Finnegan Charles was born March 29, 2025.

Joseph Duggar, born on January 20, 1995, proposed to Kendra Caldwell at his sister Joy-Anna’s wedding in May 2017. They had met through church and had been courting for only a few months when he asked her to marry him.

Joseph admitted he was nervous when he proposed, but he felt confident she’d say yes, since she had previously told him, ‘I’m just waiting on you!’ Kendra shared her reaction, saying, ‘I’m so happy and so shocked! I have so much I want to say, but I’m just speechless.’

The couple has welcomed three children: Garrett, born in June 2018, Addison, born in November 2019, and Brooklyn, born in February 2021.

Eighth in line, Josiah Duggar was born on Aug. 28, 1996.

I was so thrilled when I heard about their engagement back in March 2018, especially after following their relationship so closely! He shared that he proposed to Lauren at the very same spot where her parents got engaged – it’s a family property with a lot of history, and clearly means the world to her. It made the moment even more special, knowing how much that place means to her family.

Lauren’s future mother-in-law, Michelle, shared in a video on the family’s blog how much they adore her, calling her a ‘precious girl.’ Jessa and Ben also sent their congratulations, along with chocolate candies shaped like hugs and kisses. Michelle playfully hinted at a consolation prize for the couple if they didn’t kiss right away, holding up the chocolates.

Let’s talk about relationships – it’s something I get asked about a lot! I actually dated Marjorie Jackson for a while, but things didn’t quite align. We parted ways in the summer of 2015, and honestly, we had a really good time together. We were both really focused on following what felt right for us, and she felt like the timing just wasn’t right. We decided to take a break, and ultimately, it just didn’t work out long-term. It’s a reminder that even when there’s a connection, things don’t always go as planned, and that’s okay!

Oh my gosh, I was SO thrilled when he and Lauren got married on June 30th, 2018! They told People it was the absolute perfect day, and honestly, it looked like it was! Then, November 8th, 2019, brought the sweetest news – their daughter, Bella Milagro! Apparently, ‘Milagro’ means ‘miracle’ – and it’s so fitting because they’d shared that Lauren had a miscarriage back in October 2018. My heart just melted! And it kept getting better! They had another little girl, Daisy, in 2022, and then a son, Ezra, in May 2023! Seriously, they’re building the most adorable family ever!

Ninth sibling Joy-Anna Duggar was born Oct. 28, 1997.

Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth had been friends for 15 years before they began dating. They quickly fell in love and got engaged in February 2017, marrying just a few months later on May 26, 2017, at Cross Church in Rogers, Arkansas – the same wedding where Joseph Duggar proposed to Kendra Caldwell!

Joy-Anna and Austin Forsyth have three children: Gideon Martin Forsyth, born February 23, 2018; Evelyn Mae Forsyth, born August 21, 2020; and Gunner James Forsyth, born May 17, 2023.

Jed and Jeremiah Duggar, the second set of twins for Jim Bob and Michelle, were born on December 30, 1998.

Jed and Katey Nakatsu married in April 2021 after dating for a year. They have two children: a son named Truett, born in May 2022, and a daughter named Nora Kate, born in June 2023.

I was so thrilled to hear that Jed and Katey were expecting twins back in July 2024! And then, just a few months later, on January 8th, 2025, they welcomed their beautiful daughters, Elsie Kate and Emma Kate, into the world. It’s such a joy to follow their family’s journey!

Jeremiah, a flight instructor, is married to Hannah Wissmann, who is the sister of Stephen (Jana’s husband). They have two daughters: Brynley, born in December 2022, and Brielle, born in February 2024.

They announced the arrival of their third daughter, Emery ‘Emy’ Jane Duggar, on May 18, 2025.

No. 12 Jason Duggar was born on April 21, 2000.

Back in January 2017, the Daily Mail said Jim Bob helped Jase purchase a run-down house in Prairie Grove, Arkansas—about half an hour from the Duggar family’s home. Jase then used this as an opportunity to launch his own construction business.

He publicly announced his relationship with Maddie Grace on Instagram in May 2024, and they got married in October of the same year.

Charmed No. 13, James Duggar was born July 7, 2001.

He’s not currently dating anyone publicly, but he’s a very loving and involved uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Mom Michelle described James as the ‘funcle’ – a super fun uncle! – and said all the younger boys admire him and want to be just like him. She shared this on his 19th birthday in 2019, adding that James could always make anything happen. Even when he was little, he loved taking things apart – like appliances – figuring out how they worked, and then rebuilding them, often with his own improvements!

James put in a lot of effort this year to earn his commercial driver’s license, and he’s now skilled at operating large trucks and heavy equipment! We’re excited to see what opportunities lie ahead for him.

No. 14 Justin Duggar arrived on Nov. 15, 2002.

He began dating Claire Spivey in September 2020, and they announced their engagement the following November. They were married on February 26, 2021.

Jackson Duggar, the fifteenth child of Jim Bob and Michelle, was born on May 23, 2004. He’s pictured here with his older sister, Jill.

On Jackson’s sixteenth birthday, his mom, Michelle, complimented his funny personality and said she knew he was eager to finally get his driver’s license.

Johannah Duggar was born on October 11, 2005, which is why her family was featured in the special called 16 Kids and Moving In.

On her daughter’s fifteenth birthday in 2020, Michelle wrote about how much joy she brings to everyone. She described her daughter as friendly and sociable, always eager to meet new people. Michelle also shared how much her younger sisters look up to her, and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be her mother.

Jennifer Duggar arrived on Aug. 2, 2007, then the baby of the family.

Their TLC show that premiered Sept. 29, 2008, was christened 17 Kids and Counting.

Now, OMG, she’s a teenager.

When her daughter Jennifer turned thirteen, Michelle described her as someone you can always count on, incredibly loyal, and a lot of fun! Jennifer is beloved by her younger cousins, who constantly want her to carry them. She’s also a huge animal lover and diligently cares for her pets each day. Just recently, she even helped raise a whole litter of seven bunnies!

Here on the right, the penultimate Duggar child was born Dec. 18, 2008.

Jordyn-Grace was described by her mom in 2019 as a friendly and approachable person who quickly connects with others. Her laugh was also noted as being particularly cheerful and uplifting.

Josie Duggar, number 19 in her family, is pictured here with her niece, Meredith. She was born on December 10, 2009, three months early and weighing just 1 pound, 6 ounces. She spent six months in the NICU, the neonatal intensive care unit, after her birth.

Michelle described her daughter Josie as full of energy in a birthday post from 2020. She wrote that Josie is constantly on the go, rarely resting from the moment she wakes up until bedtime!
