As a lifelong movie fan, I was thrilled to hear that Roger Rabbit might actually return to the big screen! For those who don’t know, the character first appeared in Gary K. Wolf’s novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? back in 1981, and Disney quickly snapped up the rights. They then created Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988, a truly groundbreaking film that perfectly blended live-action and animation. Directed by the incredible Robert Zemeckis – the man behind Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, and Cast Away – it was a huge success. But, surprisingly, despite its popularity and lasting impact, a sequel never happened. Now, with Disney no longer owning the rights, a return for the famous cartoon rabbit feels more possible than ever!
For over 35 years, a follow-up to the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? has been talked about, but never made. Now, thanks to a clause in the original copyright agreement, Gary K. Wolf—the creator of Roger Rabbit—has regained the rights to his character. This means Disney no longer has creative control, and Wolf can now develop his own Roger Rabbit projects. “I can basically make my own Roger Rabbit stories,” Wolf told IMNOTBAD.com (as reported by Cartoon Brew), which is great news for fans who want to see the character return under the vision of its original creator.
What Roger Rabbit Sequels & Spinoffs Could Be Produced Now?

Wolf first introduced the character Roger Rabbit in the novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit, and continued the story in Who P-P-P-Plugged Roger Rabbit (1991) and Who Wacked Roger Rabbit (2013). These novels could now inspire sequels to the hugely popular 1988 film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which was a landmark achievement in movie history and is considered a culturally important and innovative film. Many have wondered why Disney never made a sequel, but Wolf now has the opportunity to revisit this beloved story.
In a recent interview, Wolf stated that any future Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequels need to be at least as good as the first movie – and ideally, even better. He’s promised fans that’s exactly what he’ll deliver. While adaptations of his books Who P-P-P-Plugged Roger Rabbit? and Who Wacked Roger Rabbit? are possibilities, Wolf revealed that he and his team are currently focused on a live-action version of his 2022 novel, Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business, which delves into Jessica Rabbit’s backstory.
Jessica Rabbit, known as the wife of Roger Rabbit and a famous animated character, may be getting her own movie based on her first novel. Gary Wolf, the creator of the characters, has indicated that this project is the most advanced of any potential follow-ups to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? While it’s still unknown if Kathleen Turner will reprise her role as the voice of Jessica, fans are excited about the possibility of seeing the Roger Rabbit world return to the big screen.
