While We Wait For More IT: Welcome To Derry, The Co-Showrunner Wants To Make A Spinoff That I Would Absolutely Love To See

Be warned: This article reveals key plot points from Season 1 of IT: Welcome to Derry. If you haven’t seen it yet, we recommend watching it on HBO Max before continuing!

Honestly, the future of IT: Welcome to Derry is still up in the air. The people making the show have talked about wanting to do three seasons, but HBO hasn’t said if it’s getting renewed yet. As a huge Stephen King fan, I’m really hoping we get some good news! While I’m sending all the positive energy I can, I’m also really hoping co-showrunner Jason Fuchs gets a chance to develop a spin-off focusing on Dick Hallorann – I think his story deserves to be told and would be amazing!

I was so impressed with Chris Chalk’s performance as Dick in the first season of IT: Welcome To Derry. He had one of the most compelling character journeys, and honestly, I was really hoping to see more of him. Even though the finale and the fact that Season 2 jumps back to 1935 suggest he might not be back, the director, Fuchs, told me he’s not quite ready to rule out Dick’s story. He shared how carefully they developed the character for the show and even hinted at wanting to continue exploring his path, eventually leading to the Overlook Hotel. I’m keeping my fingers crossed we haven’t seen the last of him!

The Journey Of Dick Hallorann On IT: Welcome To Derry

Dick Hallorann is presented very differently in The Shining and IT: Welcome to Derry. In The Shining, he’s friendly and immediately takes an interest in young Danny Torrance, recognizing Danny’s psychic abilities. However, the Hallorann we see in IT is much more reserved and self-centered. Though he has a strong psychic gift, he’s primarily burdened and frightened by it, rather than empowered.

Throughout the first season, which consists of eight episodes, Dick’s experiences in Derry profoundly change him, and that was a key aim for Jason Fuchs and the writing team. While he still has a long way to go before he’s the man who greets the Torrances at the Overlook hotel, he’s begun his journey, starting with helping people during the Black Spot fire and then working to prevent Pennywise’s escape. As Jason Fuchs explained to me,

This season really focuses on Dick Hallorann learning to see his abilities as a positive thing, rather than a burden. Chris’s performance was incredible and truly brought that arc to life. It makes you wonder about his future – when he leaves Leroy, he doesn’t head to Colorado as some might expect. Instead, he takes a job at a hotel in London, where I actually live now.

I especially appreciate this detail: the writers could have easily sent Dick Hallorann to Colorado at the end, but he’s not quite prepared to be the head chef at the Overlook Hotel yet. He needs to gain more experience in the hospitality industry and build his skills before taking on that role.

So, what will happen with Dick’s story in London? Jason Fuchs doesn’t know yet, but he’s excited about the possibilities and the freedom to explore new ideas.

I’m curious about what’s going on and how this chapter relates to the character’s overall story and ultimate fate. I appreciate that not everything is explained right away; I enjoy the ambiguity and the unanswered questions. It’s exciting to imagine what the future holds for Dick Hallorann.

Perhaps excited enough to create a whole new show?

After IT: Welcome To Derry, A Dick Hallorann Spinoff Would Be Super Cool

So, the idea of a movie focused solely on Dick Hallorann? It’s not new. Actually, when Mike Flanagan was making Doctor Sleep – and Carl Lumbly did a fantastic job as the ghostly Dick – they talked about doing a prequel called Hallorann that would have shown us his life before The Shining. That project stalled when Doctor Sleep didn’t quite hit its stride at the box office. But honestly, given the success of things like IT: Welcome to Derry, revisiting Hallorann’s story now feels like a really smart move – and something I’d genuinely love to see.

I asked Jason Fuchs if he had any ideas for future Stephen King adaptations, and he immediately mentioned a potential spinoff of Welcome to Derry. He envisioned the story following the psychic airman as he starts working at a hotel in London, and he explained that,

As a huge Stephen King fan, I’m interested in many of his stories. I was particularly intrigued by what you mentioned about the Dick Hallorran story and would love to see how it develops. I’d definitely be open to the possibility of helping to tell that story, if the right opportunity arose and there was shared enthusiasm.

Ideally, Jason Fuchs and Mike Flanagan would team up to create a series based on the character Dick Hallorann, with Chris Chalk in the lead role. However, knowing how busy Flanagan is with projects like the Carrie miniseries, the new Exorcist film, and the Dark Tower adaptation, I’d be perfectly happy if Fuchs and Chalk took on the project themselves.

Only time will tell if this will come to fruition, but you can count on TopMob to cover it thoroughly if it does.
