I’ve seen so many people heading to the theaters for films like Jurassic World: Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootopia 2 – they’ve all done incredibly well. Zootopia 2 is still playing and selling tickets, but it doesn’t seem like it’ll beat the year’s biggest blockbuster. That movie is having a second life now, though – it’s a huge hit again, but this time everyone’s streaming it on HBO Max!
The hugely popular film Ne Zha 2 has surpassed $2 billion at the box office and is now streaming on HBO Max. It quickly became a hit on the platform, landing at number 3 on FlixPatrol’s Top 10 Movies chart for HBO Max in its first week. It was only behind the holiday favorite Christmas with the Kranks and the Leonardo DiCaprio film One Battle After Another.
What Made Ne Zha II Such A Monster Hit At The Box Office?
The animated film Ne Zha came out in 2019 and was a huge success, earning over $726 million globally, though it didn’t quite reach $2 billion. Directed and written by Jiaozi, the movie tells the story of a young boy named Nezha, who is secretly a powerful demon orb separated from a powerful god. To make things more complicated, a prophecy says he’s destined to destroy the world!
The first Ne Zha movie was a huge hit with fans, so a sequel was highly anticipated. While high expectations don’t always translate to ticket sales, the original film already had fantastic reviews – 89% from critics and 98% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It seemed like a tough act to follow, but Ne Zha 2 managed to exceed expectations and perform even better.
The recent film Ne Zha II was a critical and commercial success, exceeding the performance of its predecessor. Critics gave it much higher marks – 89 positive reviews compared to the original’s 19 – and audiences loved it just as much, giving it a near-perfect score. Praised for its stunning animation, exciting action, and captivating story rooted in mythology, the sequel successfully replicated the elements that made the first film so popular, leading to significant box office success.
