Batman is often considered the best of the superheroes. He’s been a hugely popular character for DC Comics for decades, making him a major pop culture icon. Because of this, Batman’s story has been told in countless ways – in comics, movies, TV shows, and more. He’s one of the most frequently adapted heroes in film, with each movie offering a fresh take on the character. Hollywood especially loves Batman, and his films consistently perform well at the box office.
Batman is not only one of the world’s most popular superheroes, but also a consistently profitable movie star. Films featuring the Dark Knight almost always earn a lot of money for studios, even when they aren’t well-received – a prime example being the often-criticized 1997 film, Batman & Robin. However, there’s one Batman movie that didn’t perform as well financially, and it recently turned 32.
Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm Is Still An Animated Masterpiece

Released on Christmas Day in 1993, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is a significant film in the Batman universe. It holds the unique distinction of being the only Batman movie to initially underperform in theaters, despite also being the first animated Batman film shown in cinemas. The movie, inspired by the popular Batman: The Animated Series and taking place between the show’s first and second seasons, centers around Batman’s investigation of the Phantasm, a mysterious vigilante who is targeting Gotham City’s crime leaders.
When it comes to animated Batman films, Mask of the Phantasm is considered one of the very best. Critics loved the voice acting, its unique story which drew from various Batman comics, the music, and the animation style. Because the movie shared the same feel and look as Batman: The Animated Series, it was tonally strong and visually impressive, building on an already popular version of the character. Over thirty years later, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm still stands out as a top animated Batman movie.
Why Mask Of The Phantasm Flopped At The Box Office

Batman films have sometimes suffered because of studio meddling, and this contributed to the disappointing box office results of Mask of the Phantasm. A key issue was the very short notice given before the film’s theatrical release. It’s also believed that a weak marketing push and the timing of the release – which hurt opening weekend sales – played a role in its performance.
It’s likely that a mix of factors caused Batman: Mask of the Phantasm to do poorly in theaters initially. Despite this, the film eventually became profitable thanks to sales of home video copies, proving its lasting appeal. Unfortunately, its initial box office results seemed to discourage theatrical releases for future animated Batman films; it wasn’t until 2017 with The Lego Batman Movie that another animated Batman movie was released in theaters. Even though it wasn’t an immediate success, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is still considered a brilliant animated film.
