DC Comics is famous for shocking betrayals that have really impacted the comic book universe. While most DC stories focus on heroes saving the day – which is what attracts many readers – the most memorable tales often come from unexpected twists. When a beloved or trusted hero turns against their friends, teammates, or even the world, it creates a powerful emotional reaction. Readers are left wanting to understand the reasons behind the betrayal and what consequences will follow.
DC Comics is full of surprising twists, but some betrayals really stand out. Here’s a look at seven of the most shocking moments, from a team leader hurting a close friend to a famous hero turning against everyone.
7) Maxwell Lord Betrays Blue Beetle

Maxwell Lord is a notorious villain in the DC Universe, infamous for his actions that forced Wonder Woman to kill him – a decision that deeply strained her friendships with Batman and Superman. Surprisingly, he once led and financially supported the Justice League International. In Countdown to Infinite Crisis #1, Lord revealed to Blue Beetle that he’d created the OMAC system (One Man Army Corps) to eliminate those he considered threats to humanity. He tried to recruit Blue Beetle, but when Ted Kord refused, he was fatally shot, sparking the Infinite Crisis storyline. This act of betrayal was the catalyst for a large-scale crossover event that ultimately concluded with Lord’s death.
6) Jean Loring Betrays Sue Dibney

A shocking act of betrayal sparked one of the most debated storylines in DC Comics history: Identity Crisis. The story began with the murder of Sue Dibny, wife of the Elongated Man. Presented as a mystery, suspicion initially fell on Doctor Light, who had previously assaulted Sue. However, the true killer was revealed to be Jean Loring, the ex-wife of the Atom. Driven by delusion, she hoped Ray Palmer would reconcile with her after witnessing Ralph Dibny’s grief. Her plan failed, and she was ultimately institutionalized at Arkham Asylum.
5) Wally West Betrays Booster Gold & Harley Quinn

In 2018, DC Comics released a story called Heroes in Crisis that sparked a lot of controversy among fans. The main issue was that the story risked damaging the reputation of Wally West, who many consider the true Flash after taking over the mantle from the original Flash in Crisis on Infinite Earths. While fans were already upset that Wally was absent during the ‘New 52’ era, his return in Heroes in Crisis was even more shocking – he was portrayed as a murderer. The story revolved around a mass shooting at a mental health facility for heroes, and the mystery ultimately revealed that Wally West was the killer. He had faked his own death by killing a version of himself from another timeline and presenting him as one of the victims. Many felt this dark turn of events severely tarnished a beloved character.
4) Hal Jordan Betrays Everyone (Parallax)

Hal Jordan emerged as a key DC Comics hero during the Silver Age, joining iconic characters like Flash, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. He was widely regarded as the most powerful and determined member of the Green Lantern Corps. However, after the destruction of his hometown, Coast City, by Mongul, Hal was overwhelmed by grief and rage. This vulnerability allowed the fear-based entity Parallax to take control. As Parallax, he became an unstoppable force, and no one could defeat him. Ultimately, it was only through Hal regaining his willpower and making the ultimate sacrifice that the Earth was saved from this internal monster.
3) Green Arrow Betrays Justice League (Absolute Power)

As a huge Green Arrow fan, the Absolute Power storyline really got me! It seemed like Ollie totally betrayed the Justice League when he started working with Amanda Waller, who was trying to neutralize all the superpowered people in the DC Universe. It was shocking! But it turned out there was so much more to it. Waller had put a brain bomb in Roy Harper, so Green Arrow was basically forced to cooperate. Honestly, when he helped Waller transfer all the heroes’ powers to Amazos, I thought there was no coming back for him. But it was all a clever plan! Ollie was playing the long game, and he ended up being the one to save everyone and take down Waller. It made so much sense, because Ollie Queen never really cared about being seen as a hero anyway – he just did what needed to be done.
2) Justice League Betrays Batman (Memory Wipe)

The comic Identity Crisis revealed a second betrayal through a flashback: Doctor Light had previously sexually assaulted Sue Dibney. When the Justice League discussed how to handle this, they made a controversial decision – they used mind control to remove his ability to commit such acts and ensure he couldn’t harm anyone else, which explained his ineffectiveness as a villain for many years. Batman protested this action and tried to intervene, but Zatanna erased his memory of it. Discovering what the League had done shattered Batman’s trust in his teammates, reinforcing his belief that he needed contingency plans to control even the heroes themselves.
1) Terra Betrays Teen Titans

One of the most famous and surprising betrayals in DC Comics happened with the New Teen Titans. This team of heroes felt more down-to-earth and modern than previous DC characters, bringing them closer to the style of Marvel Comics. That’s what made Terra’s shocking reveal as a double agent working with Deathstroke in Teen Titans: The Judas Contract so impactful. It was a completely unexpected moment that helped move DC Comics’ storytelling into a new era.
