While the recent film largely retold the story of the 1990 original and received mixed reviews from critics, it remains a beloved Christmas classic. This is clear from the fact that both movies have recently been highly popular on Disney+ and Hulu. However, one actress didn’t enjoy making the film as much as its fans enjoy watching it.
She’s most famous for her role as the Pigeon Lady in ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,’ where Kevin McCallister gets separated from his family and faces off against the Wet Bandits, Harry and Marv, once again. Just like in the first movie, Kevin finds an unlikely friend in someone who initially seems frightening, and everything works out in the end.
Despite a successful career that included roles in many films and an Academy Award win for My Left Foot, Brenda Fricker has faced significant personal struggles. She recently shared on The Tommy Tiernan Show that she has battled loneliness, financial difficulties, and attempted suicide over 30 times, revealing a difficult reality behind her public image.
I used up all my savings, so now I have no money. But I’m happy as long as I have a place to live and can take care of my dog and myself. I live a simple, private life – I have a small car and a cozy cottage, and that’s enough. I fill my time with everyday things like talking to my dog, writing poetry, reading, and watching TV. It’s not much different from anyone else, except I spend a lot of time alone, which sometimes means I end up talking to the walls!
Brenda Fricker Revealed Her Struggles with Mental Health

20th Century Studios
As a film lover, it’s easy to assume actors have it made once they find success, and Brenda Fricker definitely had that – a great career and an Oscar! But her story really struck me because it’s a reminder that life is unpredictable, no matter how well things seem to be going. It shows you that even with achievement, things aren’t always perfect, and that’s true for anyone, anywhere.
During the interview, the former actress openly discussed her decades-long struggle with mental health, including battles with depression and more than 30 suicide attempts. She shared her experiences honestly, stating:
I just found out yesterday that my doctor is increasing my antidepressant dosage. I already tend to keep to myself, and while I usually choose to stay home, being told to isolate feels like it has the opposite effect – it makes me want to go out.
Fricker stated she feels grateful to a doctor at St Patrick’s Hospital in Dublin, believing they saved her life. She then went on to say:
I went through a really difficult time, but thankfully, I had an amazing doctor named Anthony Clare who saved my life. He was truly exceptional and helped me overcome a very dark period. He was incredibly insightful and really understood what I was going through, always leaving me feeling positive and much better about myself.
The actress had spoken about her depression before, previously sharing how deeply it had affected her. In a 2012 interview, she explained that she lived with depression for fifty years, but now sees a therapist weekly just to talk and connect with another person. She also bravely revealed she had tried to end her life multiple times, adding, “It’s exhausting when no one seems to hear what you’re saying.”

As a huge movie fan, I still love watching Home Alone and Home Alone 2 every year, they’re total classics! But it’s honestly a little heartbreaking to learn about the struggles the actress who played one of the most memorable characters has faced in real life. It definitely casts a bit of a shadow over how much I enjoy those films, knowing what’s happened behind the scenes.
