It’s that time of year again! Has Santa visited you this week?
2025 has been an unusual year for the tech industry. While we’ve seen significant changes before, the impact of artificial intelligence has been particularly disruptive. Microsoft is heavily investing in AI, but the results so far have been inconsistent.
Santa might be disappointed by the way Microsoft is pulling back from consumer products. Things like Surface devices, Xbox, and even Windows seem to be taking a backseat as the company focuses heavily on its partnership with OpenAI and Sam Altman, potentially damaging customer trust and reducing its visibility in stores.
Over the next year, it will become clear whether our current strategy was the right move. It’s possible we’ll find out this business model isn’t sustainable in the long run, especially as we face challenges like limited resources, rising costs, or a lack of customer interest. I don’t believe we can confidently say AI is a guaranteed success for Microsoft just yet.
As a long-time fan, I’ve always counted on Xbox, laptops, and Surface devices. But lately, even those staples feel a little uncertain. Everyone still needs a laptop for work and fun, but with RAM prices going up and up… it feels like now might be the sweet spot to grab a good deal before things get expensive, if only for a little while.
We’re curious, Windows Central readers: what awesome tech did you purchase this year? Whether it was a treat for yourself or gifts for loved ones, we want to know! Did you upgrade your TV, get a handheld gaming device like the Xbox Ally or Steam Deck, or perhaps a new Surface or laptop from another brand?
I recently got my mom a Google Pixel 9A – a big upgrade from her old, worn-out Nokia flip phone! It’s been interesting seeing her learn how to use a touchscreen and features we all consider normal, like sending pictures and making video calls with WhatsApp. I’ve also been helping some friends get their new Xbox Ally handhelds set up after they took advantage of a recent sale on the white base model. If you got one too, our beginner’s guides for both the Steam Deck and the Xbox Ally can be really helpful.
Wishing you a relaxing Christmas and happy holidays if you celebrated! From all of us at Windows Central, we wish you a very Happy New Year, and we look forward to connecting with you again soon.
