‘Marshmallow’ (2025)
Available to Stream January 1st
Twelve-year-old Morgan is a shy boy still dealing with a family tragedy and scary nightmares. He goes to summer camp hoping to make friends and feel normal, but a spooky campfire story about a child abductor makes him wonder if the legend is real. Along with his new friends, he attempts to escape the camp as a mysterious figure with an electric wand begins to hunt them down.
Marshmallow is a unique and thrilling sci-fi horror film that blends slasher elements in a way you haven’t seen before, and it’s arguably one of the best horror movies of 2025 that hasn’t gotten enough attention. It successfully updates the classic, campy slasher style for modern audiences with impressive visuals and a genuinely creepy atmosphere. If you’re looking for a simple, straightforward horror film, this might not be for you. But if you enjoy creative and innovative horror, you won’t want to miss it. You can start streaming Marshmallow on Shudder beginning January 1, 2026.
‘A Desert’ (2025)
Available to Stream January 1st
This January, filmmaker Joshua Erkman is releasing a captivating neo-noir thriller called A Desert on Shudder. The story follows Alex Clark, a photographer who gets entangled with a seductive and risky couple, Renny and Susie Q, and then vanishes. His wife, Sam, and detective Harold Palladino work to uncover what happened before he disappeared.
After debuting at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and having a short run in theaters and on demand, A Desert has quietly gained a following among fans of the genre before its release as a Shudder original. Critics have particularly praised the film’s atmospheric portrayal of the American Southwest and its unique, unhurried storytelling. While opinions are mixed, A Desert is generating buzz, making it worth seeing for yourself. You can stream it on Shudder starting January 1, 2026.
‘Beast of War’ (2025)
Available to Stream January 16th
Set during World War II in 1942, Beast of War tells the story of a group of young Australian soldiers preparing for battle. Among them is Leo (Mark Coles Smith), an Indigenous soldier facing prejudice from his fellow recruits. When their ship is attacked and they find themselves stranded, they must band together to survive not only the dangers of war, but also a relentless great white shark hunting them in the water.
While there are many shark-themed horror movies, the best ones are truly terrifying. Beast of War is one of those standouts. Set during wartime, the film combines strong bonds between soldiers with a relentless shark attack, making it a particularly exciting addition to the shark horror genre. Fans of gore will also appreciate the movie’s intense and bloody kills. You can stream Beast of War on Shudder starting January 16, 2026.
‘Mother of Flies’ (2026)
Available to Stream on January 23rd
I’m really invested in this story about Mickey, a woman facing a terrible illness who refuses to give up. When traditional medicine isn’t enough, she decides to explore some really unconventional options – even dabbling in the occult. She and her dad, Jake, go on this intense journey to find Solveig, a woman rumored to be able to connect with the spirit world. What follows is a grueling three-day ritual that completely tests their physical and mental strength, and I’m on the edge of my seat to see what happens!
I have to say, the buzz around Mother of Flies is absolutely justified. From the trailer alone, it’s clear this film is a beautifully disturbing mix of folk horror and the supernatural. What’s really cool is that it’s the fourth feature from filmmaking trio Zelda Adams, John Adams, and Toby Poser – they’ve been quietly building a dedicated fanbase with each project, and I can see why. They’re doing something unique! And Shudder is doing something smart – they’re releasing Mother of Flies with a community watch party alongside their previous film, Hellbender. If you’re a horror fan, mark January 23, 2026, on your calendar – it’s hitting Shudder then, and you won’t want to miss it.
