Alita: Battle Angel Is Running Out Of Time For Its Sequel

Hollywood’s attempts to turn anime into live-action movies haven’t gone well – that’s putting it mildly. Even with well-known and popular anime like Ghost in the Shell and Dragon Ball, these big-budget adaptations have consistently failed to impress.

What really stood out about the 2019 film Alita: Battle Angel was how it resonated with fans. Though critics weren’t overly impressed and it didn’t perform exceptionally well in theaters, anime enthusiasts embraced the movie, directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, and it’s since gained a dedicated following as a cult favorite.

It’s becoming increasingly unlikely that a sequel to the 2019 film will happen. James Cameron recently told Empire he’d like to make one. Now that he’s finished working on Avatar Fire and Ash, Cameron says he’s made a firm commitment to Robert Rodriguez to create a follow-up to Alita.

Robert Rodriguez and I are committed to making another Alita movie. We’re even exploring ways to set up a potential third film, though we’d be happy to just get one more made. We’re currently working on making that happen.

Alita: Battle Angel’s Chances Of Getting a Sequel Are Still Dicey Despite Cameron’s Pledge

I’m really excited about a potential sequel from Cameron and Rodriguez, but honestly, it looks like they’re facing some serious challenges getting it made. It’s going to be tough, but I’m still hoping they can pull it off!

Even though a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel could have been much better than the first film, the original movie’s disappointing performance at the box office makes it unlikely a second one will be made.

While Alita didn’t perform well at the box office, critics had a mixed reaction – they generally liked it, but weren’t enthusiastic. Currently, it has a 61

However, the biggest obstacle to a sequel might just be the passage of time. Alita was released almost seven years ago, and while it has a dedicated fanbase eager for a continuation, it hasn’t experienced the same positive re-evaluation by critics that other live-action anime adaptations, like Speed Racer, have.

Why Alita Still Has a Chance Despite All The Obstacles

Even though making a sequel to Alita would be difficult, it has a few key advantages: the support of James Cameron, a dedicated fanbase, and the current boom in anime’s popularity.

Because James Cameron is directing the sequel and has teamed up with Robert Rodriguez, the project has a strong advantage. Cameron is a highly regarded director with the industry influence and resources to secure funding for a film he believes in.

While critics gave Alita fairly average reviews, audiences really enjoyed it. Despite a 61

However, the biggest factor in potentially helping Alita succeed might be the growing popularity of anime. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle achieved huge international success and received a level of attention from the film industry that’s unusual for anime movies.

With a dedicated fanbase and commitments from James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez, a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel is definitely possible. However, Cameron and Rodriguez need to act fast, as Hollywood’s enthusiasm for anime projects could wane.
