Like any creative industry, making video games requires significant time and investment. Each year brings its popular titles, and now that we’re halfway through the 2020s, it’s a good time to look back at 2025 and see what memorable games it gave us. While 2020-2024 saw many great releases, 2025 delivered several truly special games that are strong candidates for the best of the decade.

Despite strong competition from recent critically acclaimed games like The Last of Us Part II, It Takes Two, Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, 2025 already boasts a number of excellent titles vying for Game of the Year. 2025 Featured Some Excellent Games

If you’re looking for a new game to play, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a must-try. This is Sandfall Interactive’s debut RPG, and it’s already considered one of the best games of 2025. The game is set in a dark fantasy version of the Belle Époque era and follows four volunteers on Expedition 33. Their mission? To defeat Paintress, a creature that’s slowly erasing people from existence during an annual event called the Gommage. You’ll experience the game from a third-person perspective, controlling a party as you explore a large world and fight fantastic monsters. Combat mixes real-time action with turn-based strategy and quick-time events.

Although games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 received a lot of attention this year, the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025 was a major event. While many of the games available at launch were updated versions of older titles, the console also had some fantastic new releases. Mario Kart World is a great addition to the series, but Donkey Kong Bonanza has been even more popular. This latest Donkey Kong game introduces fun new features, turning the game world into a vast and explorable sandbox. We can expect even more impressive games on the Switch 2 in 2026, but there’s already plenty to enjoy on the console in 2025.

While major, highly anticipated games continued to be popular in 2025, many independent studios also released successful titles.
