4 Great Sci-Fi Movies & TV Shows Coming To Netflix In January

As a huge movie fan, I’ve definitely noticed how sci-fi consistently crushes it in theaters – think Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar – they’ve basically owned the box office for years. So, it makes total sense that streaming services are scrambling for big sci-fi titles to attract viewers. Netflix, being one of the biggest players in streaming, is always adding new sci-fi stuff, and they’ve got another wave of movies and shows coming in January 2026.

If you’re a sci-fi fan looking for something new to watch at the start of the year, Netflix has you covered. Four popular titles are being added on January 1st, offering a variety of movies and shows to kick off 2026. And even if you’ve seen them before, it’s a perfect time to enjoy these hits again.

4) Johnny Mnemonic

The 1995 sci-fi film Johnny Mnemonic, starring Keanu Reeves, is coming to Netflix on January 1st. Many consider it a hidden gem, and now a new generation can discover this classic. Reeves plays a data scientist with crucial information stored in his brain, but if he can’t find the password to unlock it within 48 hours, it will kill him. The film, directed by Robert Longo, follows his desperate race against time to survive.

The movie Johnny Mnemonic has always been a bit divisive, currently holding a 20

3) Dune

Good news for sci-fi fans! Denis Villeneuve’s Dune will be available to stream on Netflix again starting January 1, 2026. This gives subscribers another chance to experience the first installment of his impressive adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novels. While the second film, Dune: Part Two, isn’t coming to Netflix just yet, you can enjoy the beginning of the story with the first movie.

2) District 9

Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 film, District 9, is coming to Netflix on January 1st. This satirical movie, set in South Africa, imagines a world where aliens arrive on Earth to escape their failing home planet. They’re confined to a controlled area and watched closely by governments, but problems begin when a government official catches an alien virus.

I remember when District 9 came out – it totally blew me away! Even though not everything Neill Blomkamp has made since has been a hit, this movie is still considered a classic alien film by a lot of people. It’s a really clever story that uses science fiction to say something about real-world issues, and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.

1) Falling Skies Seasons 1-5

I’m so excited that all 52 episodes of Falling Skies are coming to Netflix on January 1st! It’s a fantastic sci-fi series executive produced by Steven Spielberg, and it really pulls you in. The show is about what happens after a huge alien attack, and it follows a group of people trying to rebuild their lives and fight back. It got great reviews when it originally aired, and it’s awesome that it’s the biggest sci-fi release Netflix has planned for next month.
