As a long-time Dragon Ball fan who has witnessed the evolution of the series from its humble beginnings to the grandeur of Super Saiyan 4 Broly, I can confidently say that the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima has me intrigued and slightly nostalgic. While I have mixed feelings about the non-canon GT series, there’s no denying the impact it had on the franchise, especially with its iconic mini characters and the enigmatic Super Saiyan 4 transformation.
The highly anticipated debut of “Dragon Ball Daima” is just around the corner, with the new “Dragon Ball” series set to begin streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll from October 11th. Since the concept of the upcoming series was unveiled, fans have been drawing parallels between “Dragon Ball Daima” and the late ’90s show, “Dragon Ball GT”. As the premiere date approaches, these comparisons persist, making it an ideal moment to address this topic head-on.
What Is Dragon Ball GT?
If you haven’t delved into its origins: “Dragon Ball GT,” also known as “Grand Tour Dragon Ball,” is an anime spinoff from the original “Dragon Ball” series, which debuted in 1996. Unlike the manga series by Akira Toriyama (“Dragon Ball,” “Dragon Ball Z”), this sequel was not derived from any of his works but instead was created exclusively for animation by Toei Animation as a means to keep riding the wave of popularity that “Dragon Ball Z” had generated.
The tale of Dragon Ball GT follows Goku’s transformation back into a child-like form, brought about by a wish granted to recurring troublemakers, the Pilaf Gang, using a special set of “Black Star Dragon Balls” collected from various planets in the universe. These unique balls came with a strict condition: any planet that hosted a wish made on the “Ultimate Dragon Balls” had to collect and return the seven balls within a year, or face annihilation due to a feedback of the wish energy. This puts young Goku and his companions under pressure as they travel across the cosmos in search of each Black Star Dragon Ball.

Interestingly enough, Dragon Ball Super brought Broly into the official canon with its first movie adaptation, revisiting the original non-canon storyline from Dragon Ball Z. Now, I can’t help but wonder if Dragon Ball Daima is going to do the same for Dragon Ball GT, bringing this often overlooked series into the official Dragon Ball universe.
Is Dragon Ball Daima A Low-Key Remake of Dragon Ball GT?
The narrative of Dragon Ball Daima was primarily crafted by Akira Toriyama, who significantly contributed to the series’ creative design after initially providing minimal initial input. It seems that Daima serves as a reimagining or reboot of sorts for Dragon Ball GT, with certain adjustments made to its specifications.
As a passionate gamer, I’m excited to confirm that “Dragon Ball Daima” is officially part of the Dragon Ball universe. Unlike some standalone promotional anime, this series isn’t just self-contained. Instead, it delves deeper into the lore of the Demon Realm, a territory we haven’t visited much since the original Dragon Ball series. While Dragon Ball GT focused on galaxy exploration, dragon mythology, and continuations from Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Daima will take us back to familiar grounds, a direction that has primarily been explored in Dragon Ball games like Dragon Ball Heroes.
From what I’ve seen in the trailers, it appears that the narrative of “Dragon Ball Daima” revolves around me, as a fan, being transported into a miniature world along with Goku and the Z-Fighters. This is due to several demons escaping the Demon Realm and using a wish to corrupt the dragon balls, shrinking us all in size. My mission then becomes to join forces with the Kai and collect the dragon balls to reverse this curse, all while battling the forces of the Demon Realm. This story structure seems reminiscent of “Dragon Ball GT,” but it promises to focus on content inspired by the original creator, Akira Toriyama, rather than the creative team at Toei Animation. With Toriyama’s unfortunate passing, fans seem eager to accept this as a true testament to authenticity.
It seems possible that Dragon Ball Daimao could be considered as a more subtle reinterpretation of Dragon Ball GT. Only time and the release of the series can provide a definitive answer, but based on what we’ve seen so far, it certainly appears to be heading in that direction.
