Chevy Chase Spent 8 Days in a Coma Amid Heart Failure Hospitalization

Chevy Chase is looking back at a harrowing time in his life.

Chevy Chase, who was hospitalized with heart failure in 2021, is sharing his story in a new CNN documentary called I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not. The film features interviews with Chase himself, as well as those close to him, including his daughter, Caley Chase, who describe the difficult time.

Caley described the experience, as reported by People magazine on January 1st, saying, “He’s in his eighties and has essentially recovered from a life-threatening illness.” She added that it was difficult to discuss, explaining he had suffered heart failure.

His wife of 43 years Jayni Chase also shared what led up to Chase’s medical stay.

She explained that something felt off with him, but he couldn’t say what it was, so they went to the emergency room. She said his heart stopped. She also mentioned that years of alcohol use had caused cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle weakens and struggles to pump enough blood.

During Chevy Chase’s time in the hospital, doctors put him in a coma for about eight days, according to his friend Peter Aaron in a documentary. Aaron believes Chase’s subsequent memory problems stem from this event.

The Community alum went on to share what he was told about his road ahead after recovery.

Chevy explained in the documentary that doctors warned him the treatment could damage his memory, which is exactly what happened. He’s now doing better, but still needs reminders for things, as the treatment impacts his memory – something the doctors had predicted. He’s been playing card games and chess to help strengthen his cognitive abilities.

In March 2021, Chevy Chase revealed he was hospitalized for five weeks because of a heart problem. He even made a lighthearted comment about it being a good reason to stay home during the pandemic, as he also shares daughters Cydney and Emily with Jayni.

He shared with Page Six that he’s just arrived home and is overjoyed to be reunited with his family. He’s doing well and plans to spend some quiet time at home for now, not traveling anywhere.

She reassured her sister, Bella Garcia, that they would get the issue resolved eventually. Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the year she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film.

She didn’t reveal her diagnosis until 2025, sharing on Instagram that she had privately struggled with it for over ten years.

She explained that growing up, many girls are told periods are supposed to be painful and that this pain is just something women have to deal with. This leaves many of us feeling like we’re suffering in silence with something incredibly common.

Okay, so this is something I’m hearing more and more about! Recently, one of the actresses from Daisy Jones & The Six shared that she actually had to be hospitalized because of a hernia. And the surprising cause? Tight pants! Apparently, wearing things too fitted can sometimes create a gap in your abdominal muscles, and that’s what happened to her. It’s a good reminder that comfort and health should always be a priority, even when it comes to fashion!

I saw this hilarious message from a friend on X, which used to be Twitter. She playfully called me out for being quiet on social media, and then dropped this amazing story! Apparently, six months ago I wore pants that were… a little too snug, and it actually gave me a hernia! I’ve been too embarrassed to mention it, but honestly, who can tweet when they’re secretly dealing with that?! It just goes to show, you never know what’s going on behind anyone’s carefully curated online presence. Comfort is always key, people!

I was so worried to hear that Brian Austin Green had a really scary health scare! He shared back in April 2025 that he’d had surgery because his appendix was about to burst. Thankfully, he’s recovering now, and I’m sending him all my best wishes!

Brian shared in an Instagram video that he recently experienced stomach pain which led him to the emergency room. He explained that his appendix had a hole in it – it hadn’t fully burst, but was very close to doing so.

He added, “I’m on the road to recovery. It’s not an easy process. This is my first major surgery.”

According to Reuters, the U.S. Women’s National Team player was seen slowly sitting down on the field with a teammate supporting her, just before collapsing. Trainers were immediately called to assess her condition.

Savannah received immediate medical attention on the field and was taken to a nearby hospital for more tests, according to a statement from the National Women’s Soccer League. They reported that she is currently in stable condition and is alert.

As someone who’s always been interested in well-being, I found it really insightful to hear Adam Devine talk about his health. He recently shared that an accident he had as a kid – he was hit by a cement truck when he was eleven – still causes him problems today. It’s a reminder that childhood injuries can sometimes have long-lasting effects, and it’s important to prioritize taking care of your body, no matter what your age!

Let me tell you, the last year has been incredibly tough. I was dealing with these awful spasms all over my body, and honestly, doctors were telling me things were very serious – they actually said I was facing a life-threatening situation. It was a really frightening time, and a complete nightmare to navigate.

He acknowledged that pain is temporary, explaining that his body has some minor imperfections and isn’t functioning perfectly.

A former contestant on The Bachelor went to the hospital because of severe back pain. He said he was in so much pain he could barely move and had to crawl on his hands and knees after the pain worsened during a road trip with a friend.

He described a lingering tingling sensation in his knees and toes, saying it was “crazy” in a March 2025 episode of his podcast, Trading Secrets. To illustrate the extent of the issue, he explained that just a few weeks or a month prior, he was able to squat 295 pounds. Now, he can’t even do a squat or stand on one leg without falling, comparing the feeling to having had a stroke.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Gina Kirschenheiter, from The Real Housewives of Orange County, revealed that her ex-husband, Matt Kirschenheiter, had a heart attack in March 2025, but he is now recovering.

Let me tell you, it was quite a shock back in March of 2025 when the incredibly funny star of 30 Rock had a bit of a health scare at a Knicks game. He actually needed to be wheeled out of Madison Square Garden, which was definitely concerning for everyone there!

The comedian later posted an update online, explaining he had food poisoning but was starting to feel better.

In February 2025, the former Even Stevens star revealed she was shot in the face during a birthday celebration for her husband, Brendan Rooney. They were on a clay pigeon shooting trip when the incident occurred.

Let me tell you, something scary happened recently. I was at a gathering and unfortunately, someone discharged a firearm carelessly, and I ended up being hit in the face. It was a truly frightening experience. Thankfully, Brendan Rooney was an absolute hero – he instantly checked me over and got me to the hospital right away. I was actually hit five times, and one of those shots came dangerously close to my right eye – less than an inch away, which is almost unbelievable. I’m so grateful for Brendan’s quick thinking and help.

The Kim Possible actor explained that a small piece of something got stuck behind their eye. Doctors have advised against removing it with surgery right now, and they’ll continue to monitor the situation, as their vision is currently normal.

Oh my gosh, she actually said she’s just so thankful to still be here! It completely broke my heart, but in the best way, you know? She was talking about how much she loves her daughters, her husband, her whole family and all her friends… it was so sweet. She said she literally saw her life flash before her eyes, and honestly, it made me tear up. She’s right, though – we need to hug the people we love whenever we can. It just proves how quickly everything can change, and it’s so important to remember that.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its downsides, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” in photos, Schumer was surprised when doctors began commenting on her appearances online, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome. They pointed out her face looked unusually swollen and encouraged her to seek medical attention. This prompted Schumer to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections following a breast reduction and C-section, which could have caused the condition. She wouldn’t have connected the injections to her symptoms without the online comments. Schumer recently shared that she’s relieved to learn her type of Cushing syndrome will resolve on its own and that she is healthy, calling it “the greatest news imaginable.”

During a game in December 2024, an AHL player was accidentally cut by another player’s skate and needed 25 stitches to close the wound. After his son fully recovered, New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald told ESPN how relieved they were, saying, “We feel very lucky, and I wouldn’t want any parent to go through that.”

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly developed stroke-like symptoms, struggling to speak and noticing her face drooping. Although her symptoms briefly subsided, she went to the hospital for evaluation. Doctors discovered she’d had a small blood clot travel to her brain, which they identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack). Further testing at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart, known as a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This hole allowed the blood clot to reach her brain, causing the TIA. Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now feeling well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the condition affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it had become increasingly difficult for him to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well and feeling much better, adding that it had been a frightening experience, but he was going to be okay and she was grateful he was fine.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the serious health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had initially kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he was suffering from a severe headache when he suddenly collapsed. He doesn’t remember the next twenty days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for extensive rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers he received, saying he needed every single one.

The reality TV star said she briefly stopped breathing while running a mile during the first challenge on the NBC show.

She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, everything went dark, but she then experienced a bright light, leading her to realize she had died that day.

She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially begins to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, bravely battled a life-threatening medical condition. In a 2019 essay for The New Yorker, titled “A Battle for My Life,” she described a terrifying experience she had at the gym. She suddenly suffered an excruciating headache and became violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a stroke caused by bleeding around the brain – due to a ruptured aneurysm. She immediately underwent surgery to repair it, but the pain was immense. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, leaving her unable to speak coherently.

After a week, her speech returned, and she was discharged from the hospital after a month. However, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had grown, requiring a second surgery. This surgery was unsuccessful, leading to a major bleed, and doctors warned her that another operation – this time requiring them to access her brain directly through her skull – was her only chance of survival.

Fortunately, Emilia has made a full recovery and is now, thankfully, at 100

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, recently shared how much she appreciates her family’s support after a health scare. In January 2024, Cori suffered a stroke and immediately reached out to her loved ones, sending them a picture and a text message. She told TopMob News that her family quickly came to her aid.

Cori ended up staying in the hospital longer than expected due to other health issues. In addition to recovering from the stroke, she was also dealing with complications from lupus and kidney problems.

Thankfully, Cori is now recovering well. “I’m doing great,” she said. While she had to work on regaining some motor skills, she’s otherwise feeling good.

Shailene Woodley struggled with her health throughout her early twenties. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she explained that she experienced hearing loss, extreme fatigue, and digestive issues. She saw many doctors but received conflicting diagnoses.

Because she grew up with a holistic approach to wellness and studied herbalism, Shailene sought answers from both traditional doctors and alternative healers. This search for relief lasted for ten years.

She explained that the physical discomfort led to emotional challenges, including fear of food and struggles with body image and identity. Ultimately, after addressing both her physical and mental health, Shailene fully recovered and is now feeling very healthy and happy.
