This director is highly respected and his films have earned over $5 billion globally. Despite this success, he’s also had some movies that didn’t perform well, such as Exodus: Gods and Kings from 2014.
As a huge film buff, I always find it fascinating when movies get a second look. This particular biblical epic, which came out just before another one of his films, unfortunately didn’t do as well at the time. It actually got some pretty harsh criticism, and was even pulled from some cinemas because people felt it wasn’t historically accurate. But, I’m excited to hear that it’s getting another chance! It’s headed to Starz on January 1st, 2026, and I’m definitely planning to check it out with fresh eyes.
I recently watched Exodus: Gods and Kings, directed by Ridley Scott. The screenplay was a collaborative effort by Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Jeffrey Caine, and Steven Zaillian. It tells the story of Moses and the Exodus – the incredible escape of the Hebrews from Egypt, which is famously detailed in the Book of Exodus in the Bible.
The movie Exodus: Gods and Kings tells the story of Moses and Ramses, who grow up together as brothers in Egypt. When Ramses becomes king, Moses is his closest advisor. But Moses learns he’s actually of Hebrew origin, and Ramses responds by sending him into the desert, a punishment that usually meant certain death.
The story highlights God’s purpose for Moses: to liberate the Israelites from slavery. Moses returns after years in exile and asks Pharaoh Ramses to free his people, but Ramses refuses, setting the stage for a conflict fueled by divine power.
Beyond director Ridley Scott’s reputation, the film Exodus: Gods and Kings featured a hugely talented cast. Christian Bale starred as Moses, and Joel Edgerton played Ramses II. Rounding out the impressive ensemble were Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley.
Exodus: Gods and Kings Was a Critical and Commercial Failure
Films like Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and The Martian have been successful for this filmmaker, but he’s also faced setbacks. Exodus: Gods and Kings wasn’t well-received by either critics or audiences.

The movie Exodus: Gods and Kings was prohibited in Egypt. The country’s culture minister, Gaber Asfour, criticized it as being pro-Zionist and cited historical errors as the reason. Specifically, he objected to the film’s depiction suggesting that Moses and the Israelites were the builders of the pyramids.

Morocco and the United Arab Emirates both banned the film just before its release. Morocco objected to its depiction of God’s voice, while the UAE cited numerous inaccuracies in the storyline.
