Spoiler alert for Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 2! Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers have been a key couple in the show since they first teamed up to find Will Byers back in 1983. What started as an unexpected connection between a popular girl and an outsider deepened when they investigated Barb Holland’s disappearance, and they seemed incredibly close for years. However, things started to fall apart in Season 4 as they lived far apart and realized they wanted different things out of life. Season 5 officially ends their relationship, allowing both characters to grow individually instead of forcing them to stay together.
Nancy and Jonathan break up during a terrifying ordeal in the Upside Down’s version of the Hawkins lab. After almost collapsing the structure of the Upside Down, they find themselves trapped with no way out. As a strange, white substance melts and starts to fill the room, they climb onto a table to stay safe. Thinking they’re about to die, they finally air their grievances, arguing about everything from their musical preferences to each other’s habits. In a surprising turn, Jonathan reveals he’s been hiding an engagement ring – and asks Nancy not to marry him.
Throughout the fourth season of Stranger Things, it became clear that Nancy and Jonathan struggled to connect while living apart, and their breakup in Season 5 confirmed that their relationship was built on shared hardship rather than lasting compatibility. They both realized that the trauma they experienced together wasn’t enough to build a future on. Despite caring for each other, they felt trapped and unable to grow as individuals. Jonathan throwing away the ring, which landed with a distinct sound on the hard floor, powerfully symbolized the end of their romance.
Will Nancy End Up with Steve in Stranger Things?

During a heated discussion, Jonathan asks Nancy if she’s been growing distant because of Steve Harrington. Nancy acknowledges that Steve makes her laugh, but insists he didn’t influence her decision to break up with Jonathan. She clarifies that Steve is just a friend, not a romantic interest, which cleverly avoids the usual love triangle tropes often seen on TV.
Throughout the fifth season of Stranger Things, Steve continues to show romantic interest in Nancy, hinting at a possible reunion. However, the story seems to be moving towards a more complex ending where Nancy focuses on her own personal growth rather than simply getting back together with someone. This allows all three characters involved to remain true to themselves and keeps the focus of the final showdown on the group’s fight for survival.
You can now stream Volume 2 of Stranger Things Season 5 on Netflix. The last part of this popular supernatural series will be released on January 31st.
As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to Nancy Wheeler’s future. Do you think she’s better off ending the series single, focusing on her career and independence? Or are you rooting for her and Steve to finally get back together? I’m really curious to hear everyone’s opinions – let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum!
