Jimmy Kimmel appeared on British TV station Channel 4’s yearly Alternative Christmas Message and jokingly criticized the United States, saying, “We’re not bright. We’re Americans.” The four-minute segment allowed Kimmel to playfully poke fun at his lack of knowledge about British customs, deliver pointed criticisms of President Trump, and talk at length about himself.

Kimmel might use self-deprecating humor to soften his criticism of the United States, but his comments felt genuinely harsh. While his speech seemed intended to uplift the British audience, many Americans likely found it discouraging.
Despite speaking in front of a warmly lit Christmas tree, the comedian, dressed in a cardigan, delivered a critical speech about the United States.
America’s “Battle Over Free Speech”
Since 1993, Channel 4 has provided an alternative to the Queen’s annual Christmas message by inviting a diverse range of public figures to speak to the nation. Previous speakers have included notable individuals like the former Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Stephen Fry, and even the cartoon character Marge Simpson. This year, Channel 4 chose Jimmy Kimmel because he’s been a prominent voice in debates about free speech in America.
The irony, of course, being that in the UK, people are being arrested for social media posts.
Last September, ABC temporarily removed Jimmy Kimmel’s show from the air following his comments about the person accused of attacking Charlie Kirk. Kimmel stated that the network received a threat from the government and that led to the show being suspended.

Actually, it was local stations, not anyone else, who asked for him to be taken off the air. Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t seem to acknowledge that difference.
Kimmel said his show returned with a lot of momentum, noting his win and the president’s loss. However, despite this, the show’s ratings dropped after its return, and ABC has only renewed his contract for one additional year.
When Kimmel concluded his speech with the line, “We are not bright. We’re Americans,” he seemed to be referring to his audience – a group he’s largely disconnected from.
He was particularly critical of President Trump, stating that Trump was essentially calling for people to be executed.
Kimmel: “We Are a Right Mess”
Kimmel made sure to tell the British audience that they held no ill will towards their king. However, he clarified that some Americans simply didn’t recognize the authority of the British monarch.
As a movie buff, I feel like what’s happening in America right now feels like a disaster movie playing out in real life. It honestly feels like we’re dismantling everything that makes America, well, America. I mean, we’re attacking the press, dismissing science and reliable medicine, undermining the courts, and even the very idea of a stable government feels shaky. It’s a total mess, and frankly, it’s terrifying to watch.

Kimmel seemed to want to finish with an optimistic thought. Pretending to speak for the United States – which he clarified he wasn’t authorized to do – he sent a Christmas message to friends in Britain: don’t lose faith in us. We’re facing some challenges at the moment, but we’ll get through them.
As a final thought, he said, “We all know we tend to be slow getting started, but will we pull it off eventually? Possibly. Give us around three years to see.”
As of today, the White House hasn’t commented on Kimmel’s statements. Many of his former viewers probably aren’t surprised and are just as likely to ignore him whether he’s on American or British television.
