James Cameron has detailed plans for Avatar 4 and 5, but they might not happen if the films don’t perform well after Avatar: Fire and Ash.
As a huge fan of the first two films, I was a little worried to hear the director say that Avatar 3 really needs to be a box office success. It seems like even though Disney’s already scheduled the next installments, they’re waiting to see if this one makes money before greenlighting anything further. It’s a bit frustrating, honestly – I’m excited for the future of Pandora, but it’s clear business has to come first.
Cameron shared with Entertainment Weekly that if his movie Fire and Ash doesn’t do well, he’ll publicly announce the plots for the fourth and fifth movies in the series.
He wasn’t sure if the story would continue, but he expressed hope that it would. He added that they consistently demonstrate the financial viability of continuing the project.
Look, if for any reason we don’t end up making sequels four and five, I promise I’ll be upfront with everyone. I’ll hold a press conference and lay out exactly what we had planned for those films. How does that sound?
Despite not needing a press conference, the movie Fire and Ash has already earned over $500 million worldwide after only being in theaters for a week.
Cameron previously shared with TopMob magazine that he’d be fine if the Avatar story ended with ‘Fire and Ash,’ saying it would provide a very satisfying conclusion.
He’s already planned out potential storylines for a fourth and fifth movie, including a six-year leap forward where Neytiri travels to a ruined, futuristic Earth.
Cameron said he’s eager to direct those films, but feels less optimistic about them than usual.
He’s worried about how much the media world has changed. He explains that going to the movies now feels like a special event, reserved for only a few films people think are worth seeing on the big screen. He believes the film industry is currently struggling after the pandemic and the rise of streaming, and he doesn’t see it improving anytime soon.
