Black Actors Gave Great Performances In 2025 Movies, And These 10 Are My Favorites

2025 brought a fantastic lineup of movies, with strong performances across all kinds of genres. It was especially great to see so much talent from Black actors and actresses. I want to share ten performances that really stood out to me, so let’s talk about them.

Michael B. Jordan Puts On An Incredible Showcase In Sinners

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is a compelling film on many levels, largely thanks to Michael B. Jordan’s incredible performance as twins Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore. Jordan flawlessly embodies the unique personalities of each brother, creating characters that feel real and avoid falling into predictable tropes. He also brings a strong physical presence to the roles, which is particularly noticeable in the film’s climax. Overall, it’s a fantastic performance, and the widespread praise Jordan has received is well-deserved.

Chase Infiniti Serves Up One Of The Best Feature Film Debuts Ever With One Battle After Another

Chase Infiniti was a complete surprise, and it’s fantastic that more people are taking notice of her. She recently starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, One Battle After Another, giving a truly remarkable performance as Willa Ferguson. Infiniti perfectly captures Willa’s adventurous nature, while also conveying a powerful sense of urgency in the film’s most intense scenes. It’s a standout performance that defines a generation, and I’m certain we’ll be seeing a lot more of Infiniti in the future.

Miles Caton Is A True Revelation In Sinners

Miles Caton is a promising new talent who recently made his film debut in Sinners. He delivers a remarkably sincere and powerful performance as Sammie “Preacherboy” Moore, an aspiring blues musician. While the entire cast is strong, Caton truly anchors the film emotionally. His singing, particularly in the juke joint scene, is exceptional, and I’m eager to see what he does next.

Tessa Thompson’s Work In Hedda Furthers Her Status As A Skilled Leading Lady

Tessa Thompson seems perfectly suited for the lead role in Nia DaCosta’s Hedda. She plays Hedda Gabler with effortless grace and a captivating, slightly mischievous charm. Though Hedda isn’t always likable, Thompson’s careful and detailed performance beautifully conveys the character’s underlying sadness. Hopefully, this role – and more like it, especially in period dramas – will come Thompson’s way soon.

Damson Idris Gives F1 A Sweet Boost With His Energized Performance

Damson Idris is a talented actor, and you can see that even in shows like Snowfall. But he truly shines in the film F1, where he plays the confident and skilled driver, Joshua Pierce. Idris brings a cool confidence to the role, expertly showing both Joshua’s arrogance and his hidden vulnerabilities. It’s also remarkable how well he acted alongside veteran Brad Pitt, and that he actually learned to drive for the racing scenes. Those accomplishments alone are incredibly impressive.

Wunmi Mosaku’s Sinners Performance Is Both Soulful And Sweet

Wunmi Mosaku delivers a powerful and nuanced performance as Annie in Sinners, a complex character brought to life with incredible conviction. While Annie is deeply knowledgeable about Hoodoo and the supernatural, Mosaku also portrays her as a relatable wife and mother, providing a sense of emotional stability to the story. Mosaku, known for her role in Loki, infuses Annie with wisdom and makes every line she speaks captivating. It’s a truly moving performance—one of the most impactful of the year.

Edi Gathegi Outshines Superman… In Superman

While David Corenswet is great as Superman, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific is the real standout in the film! Gathegi’s character, a smart and tech-focused hero who wears a mask, provides a level-headed voice and delivers both insightful information and witty lines. He brings a thoughtful quality to the Justice Gang member, making him feel both down-to-earth and incredibly powerful. Hopefully, James Gunn has big plans for the character and will continue to feature Gathegi in future DC projects.

Naomi Ackie Adds A Delightful Dose Of Strength And Warmth To Mickey 17

Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming film, Mickey 17, is another reason to pay attention to Naomi Ackie’s talent. While she plays Nasha Barridge, a security agent and love interest in the movie, her character is far more complex than that. Nasha has her own ambitions and isn’t simply defined by her relationships, even though she values them. Ackie is perfectly suited for the role, skillfully portraying both Nasha’s strength and her softer side, and she brings a welcome sense of humor to the film. She truly deserves recognition for her performance.

Delroy Lindo Is Nothing Short Of A Scene-Stealer In Sinners

Delroy Lindo delivers a truly outstanding performance as Delta Slim in Sinners, possibly the best of his impressive career. He brings both much-needed humor and genuine sadness to the role of the bluesman, with a particularly moving scene that stands out. While it was surprising he wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe, it doesn’t diminish how perfect his performance is.

David Jonsson Gives One Of The Year’s Best Performances In The Long Walk

David Jonsson is an actor you need to know, particularly after his impressive work in The Long Walk. He delivers a remarkable performance as Peter McVries, bringing a troubled but hopeful young man to life with incredible depth. Known from Rye Lane, Jonsson plays Pete with real conviction, and his delivery – especially a powerful monologue about hope – is truly captivating. He’s the emotional center of the film and a talent to watch, and I’m excited to see what projects he takes on next.

Black actors delivered outstanding performances this past year, and the ones highlighted here truly deserve recognition. There were many others as well – including Regina Hall, Jay Ellis, Teyana Taylor, Keke Palmer, and ASAP Rocky – who also shone. Hopefully, we’ll see even more incredible acting in the years to come.
