Rebecca Gayheart knows her relationship with Eric Dane is confusing.
The former Beverly Hills, 90210 star revealed more about her relationship with her husband, also a former Grey’s Anatomy actor. They have been separated since September 2017, but remain married as he continues to battle ALS.
Rebecca and Eric have been friends for a very long time, having first met in 2003. In an essay for The Cut, published on December 29th, Rebecca shared that she cares for Eric deeply and that they had a wonderful marriage for 15 years, resulting in their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. However, she also acknowledged that their relationship faced significant difficulties and ultimately became unhealthy.
She explained that they had been separated for eight years, but remained legally married. They had considered divorce at one point, but ultimately decided against it. During that time, they both pursued relationships with other people.
The 54-year-old, recently seen with Peter Morton, shared that her relationship with 53-year-old Eric may seem unusual to others, but it’s fulfilling for both of them.
She described their connection as complex and often misunderstood. While it wasn’t a romantic love, it felt like family. She explained that she always wants what’s best for Eric and will always try to support him, and she knows he feels the same way about her.
Rebecca explained that she wants to do everything she can to support him and make things smoother for him. She also wants to set an example for her daughters, teaching them that helping others is the right thing to do.

Rose McGowan, known for her role in Jawbreaker, recently withdrew her divorce papers from 2018. This happened before her ex-husband, Eric, publicly announced his diagnosis of ALS. She also shared that despite their separation, they easily spend time together with their daughters because they live just twelve minutes apart.
This year, my daughters and I have been spending a lot of time at Eric’s place. We often eat meals together, and we visit frequently—though I always make sure to call ahead. I never just show up unannounced; I always let him know I’m on my way, whether I’m coming with Georgia or just stopping by.

Rebecca explained that they want to support him while he prioritizes his family. He’s expressed a strong desire to spend as much time with them as possible, and she’s dedicated to making that happen.

Eric Dane revealed he received a diagnosis of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, in April 2025.
Dane shared with People magazine that he has been diagnosed with ALS. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family as they face this new challenge together.

As a huge fan, I was so relieved to hear that Jacob Elordi isn’t letting his health diagnosis stop him from working! He announced back in April of this year that he’s still filming the last season of Euphoria, which is amazing news. It’s great to know we’ll still see him on screen.
As someone who’s always advocating for a fulfilling life, I was really touched by Dane’s recent comments. He shared that working on his Amazon MGM Studios series, Countdown, which came out this summer, has actually helped him stay mentally agile while dealing with his health challenges. It’s a beautiful reminder that pursuing your passions can be incredibly powerful, even when facing difficult times.
He told TopMob News in June 2025 that he generally enjoys his work, despite facing some challenges. He said he maintains a positive attitude, and that’s what’s most important to him.

As someone who follows health and wellness closely, I’ve been keeping up with the updates from the Grey’s Anatomy actor since he shared his diagnosis a couple of months ago. He recently opened up about what led him to seek medical attention, detailing the symptoms he experienced before getting answers. It’s so brave of him to share his story, and I think it’s really important to raise awareness about recognizing potential health issues.
In a June 2025 interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, Dane shared that he first noticed weakness in his right hand. “I didn’t think much of it at first,” he explained, “I figured I’d been using my phone too much or just felt tired. But after a few weeks, I realized it was getting worse.”
After nine months of doctor’s visits – seeing two hand specialists and two neurologists – Dane received a diagnosis of ALS.
The father of two said he’ll never be able to erase those three letters from his mind. They’re the first thing he thinks about every morning, and it’s a harsh reality, not something he can simply wake up from.

He explained how the rare disease has impacted his physical health and shared his expectations for how it will progress in the future.
During his interview with Sawyer, Dane explained that the left side of his body is still working, but the right side has completely stopped. He added that he worries he may lose function in his left hand within a couple of months, which he finds deeply concerning.

After more than 20 years of marriage, Rebecca Gayheart has been supporting her husband, Dane, as he deals with health issues. The couple had previously filed for divorce in 2018, but Rebecca requested the case be dismissed in March.
During his interview with Sawyer, Dane explained that he speaks with Rebecca daily. They’ve grown closer as both friends and parents, and he considers her his greatest advocate and strongest source of support, someone he relies on heavily.
According to Gayheart, she and Dane are the “best of friends.”
The Beverly Hills, 90210 star told TopMob News on April 9, 2025, that they have a strong co-parenting relationship. They’ve found a way to successfully maintain a family dynamic, which they believe is very positive for both their children and themselves.

As Dane celebrates achievements with his daughters, Billie and Georgia, he’s also shared that he’s upset about how his ALS is impacting his family.
The actor shared during an interview with GMA that he’s struggling with the possibility of his daughters experiencing the same pain he did – losing a parent at a young age. His own father died by suicide when he was a boy, and he’s now facing a situation where he might be separated from his daughters while they are still young. Ultimately, he just wants to be with his family and continue working when possible.

Dane was scheduled to present at the 2025 Emmys with his Grey’s Anatomy colleague, Jesse Williams, on September 14th, but he couldn’t make it. He later revealed that he had to miss the show due to a hospital stay a few weeks prior.
In an interview with The Washington Post published on October 2nd, he explained that he was receiving stitches in the hospital during the Emmys due to a serious illness – ALS.
“I was a really upset about it,” Dane added. “But you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE what Dane did! Back in September 2025, he actually met with doctors and people from I Am ALS – it was incredible! He even spoke with Congressman Eric Swalwell, trying to get more federal funding for ALS research. It’s just… he’s so dedicated to finding a cure for this awful disease, and I’m completely blown away by everything he does!
In a TikTok video shared by Representative Eric Swalwell on September 29th, Dane said, “I want to live a full life.” He explained, “I have two daughters, and I want to be there to see them graduate college, get married, and maybe even have children of their own.”
