Sports anime is incredibly popular these days, and it’s easy to see why. Shows like Haikyu!!, Blue Lock, The Medalist, Slam Dunk, and The Prince of Tennis have all captured the excitement of their sports in a unique anime style, attracting lots of new fans. But when it comes to boxing, one anime series consistently stands out as the best portrayal of the sport. Sadly, that series is currently on hiatus, and there’s no news about when it will come back.
The long-running boxing manga Hajime no Ippo, created by George Morikawa and launched in 1989, is taking another break. This time, however, publisher Kodansha hasn’t announced when the series will return or given a reason for the pause. Earlier this month, Morikawa shared that he’d been hospitalized but has since been discharged and plans to rest. Interestingly, he posted about relaxing by building a Gundam model – a hobby he’s been enjoying during his time off.
Ippo’s Future (And Finale)

The popular manga series Hajime no Ippo has been running for decades, and the creator, Morikawa, suggested the story is nearing its end back in 2023. While he hasn’t given a specific date for the final chapter, Morikawa recently shared that he’s been working as a manga artist for 34 years, after debuting at age 17. He feels the length of the series is significant, but he won’t be fully satisfied until it’s finished, and he hopes to share the final chapter with fans soon.
Morikawa’s commitment to boxing goes beyond simply continuing to create the Hajime no Ippo manga since the late 1980s. He also owns a real boxing gym in Japan, JB Sports Gym, which is completely themed around the series. The gym trains aspiring boxers and is filled with references to the manga and its characters. Several former professional boxers, including Fukushima Manabu, Yusuke Takeuchi, and Yuki Yamazaki, have contributed to the gym’s unique atmosphere and training.
Fans disappointed by the recent break in the manga series have even more to worry about: as of today, there’s no news about a new anime season. The last anime adaptation, Hajime no Ippo: Rising, was released in 2013 by Studio Madhouse, and there are still many chapters of the manga that haven’t been animated. Hopefully, Ippo’s story will continue on screen in the future.
