Macaulay Culkin may take acting breaks, but that doesn’t mean he wants to stay home alone forever.
Macaulay Culkin, best known for his role in Home Alone, recently addressed rumors about his long career in acting, which started when he was only four years old.
Macaulay Culkin explained on the SmartLess podcast that he’s technically retired, but he’ll occasionally take on a project if it interests him. He describes this as a cycle of retiring, working, and then immediately retiring again, stating that every job he takes is presented as his last.
The 45-year-old actor, currently appearing in the new season of The Fallout, largely stopped acting after starring in Richie Rich at age 14. He recently shared with podcast hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes that he had made most of his money by that point.
He said he stopped pursuing it for almost ten years. He just focused on typical teenage experiences – going to high school, falling in love, and experimenting with drinking, for example.
Macaulay Culkin explained that he reached a point where he had financial security and could have spent all day relaxing and playing video games. He shares two young sons, Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3, with Brenda Song, and felt he had the freedom to do whatever he pleased.
And what he wanted to do at that point in his life was spend time around people his own age.

Anna Chlumsky, known for her role in My Girl, shared that growing up, she mostly worked with adults and missed out on having friends her own age. She always wished she’d had the chance to go to school and connect with people her age.
He explained that he’d reached a point where he felt he’d earned enough. He thought, ‘I hope everyone else has made their money, because I’m not making any more.’ He’d established his reputation, achieved success, and built his wealth. Now, he only continues to work because he enjoys it. He said the only reasons to take on a job are for the pay, the enjoyment, and the recognition.
Anna Chlumsky, known for her role in My Girl, shared that growing up, she didn’t have much experience working with kids her own age. She was mostly around adults and really wanted the chance to go to school and have friends who were the same age as her.

Macaulay explained that when he decided to act again, he wanted to be certain it was his own choice, not something he was pressured into as a child by his parents.
I felt lost and was trying to discover my purpose. This opportunity wasn’t something I actively sought out; it found me. I wanted to pursue it in my own way, on my own schedule.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas became well-known in 1991 for his role as the smart and lovable middle child, Randy Taylor, on the show Home Improvement. Throughout the 1990s, he also appeared in several films, including voicing young Simba in The Lion King (though another actor did the singing) and starring alongside Brad Renfro in Tom and Huck (1995) and Devon Sawa in Wild America (1997).
In 1998, he left the show Home Improvement (his character, Randy, moved to Costa Rica) to concentrate on his education, while still continuing to act in other projects.
In 2004, he played a recurring character on 8 Simple Rules. Then, in 2013, he worked with Tim Allen again – this time directing and appearing in multiple episodes of Last Man Standing, where Allen played his TV dad.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas stepped away from acting to focus on his personal life, even graduating from Columbia University in 2010. Despite rarely appearing in public, whenever paparazzi photos of him surface, they quickly spread across the internet.

Macaulay Culkin isn’t the only child star who made a big impression early on. At just six years old, Jeremy Lipnicki held his own against Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, delivering some truly memorable lines. He continued acting in popular films like Stuart Little, Doctor Dolittle (as the voice of Baby Tiger), The Little Vampire, and Little Mike, even appearing on Dawson’s Creek. But he decided to step away from the spotlight to enjoy a typical high school life.
In 2017, actor Jake Lipnicki shared on Instagram that he had been bullied in middle school, hoping his story would help others going through similar experiences.
He was severely bullied as a child, and surprisingly, some of those same kids later tried to connect with him on Facebook. He remembered being told he’d never work again, and this led to nightly panic attacks as he dreaded facing more embarrassment. Despite everything, he persevered and now feels grateful for his life, hoping to share a message of hope: things do improve.
Even now, he continues to work in the entertainment industry, most recently appearing in the 2023 Lifetime movie, Secrets at the Museum. Originally from Los Angeles, he’s also a skilled martial artist with a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Demonstrating his commitment to his community, he volunteered to help provide extra security at a synagogue in May 2021, following an increase in anti-Semitic incidents.

Wilson starred in Mrs. Doubtfire at 6 and Matilda at 9 before putting acting on the back burner.
In 2016, the writer and activist published her memoir, Where Am I Now?: True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame. She’s also made appearances on the show Broad City and provided voice work for animated series like BoJack Horseman, Big Hero 6: The Series, and Helluva Boss.
Wilson remembered that a former friend once cheerfully asked her, ‘Do you realize you’ve already reached the best part of your life?’ She didn’t know what to say at the time, but now she’d respond by saying that question was off-base. She hasn’t peaked, because she’s no longer letting others control her story – she’s now writing it herself, as she explained in a February 2021 op-ed for The New York Times about the challenges of early fame for girls.

You might remember Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a surprisingly seasoned actor even back in the ’90s! I recall when he first really caught my eye – he was only 14 when 3rd Rock From the Sun premiered in 1996, playing the relatable Tommy Solomon. It was amazing to see such a young talent handle comedy so well! And that same year, he also showed a different side of himself playing Demi Moore’s son in the thriller, The Jury. He really proved he could do it all right from the start.
He quickly became known for a variety of roles, including the charming love interest in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You, a street-smart character in the 2004 drama Mysterious Skin, and a determined teenage detective searching for his missing ex-girlfriend in the 2005 noir film Brick.
Even though he looked young well into his twenties, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has built an impressive career playing adult roles. Some of his notable films include 500 Days of Summer, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Inception, 50/50, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, Lincoln, Don Jon (which he also wrote and directed), and Snowden. More recently, he portrayed a prosecutor in the historical drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 and the controversial Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick in the series Super Pumped.
He quietly married Tasha McCauley in 2014 and they share three children.

Natalie Portman gained recognition early in her career thanks to her remarkably mature performance in the 1994 film The Professional, and she’s continued to deliver strong performances ever since. After her impressive start, she’s appeared in many popular and diverse films, including the Star Wars prequels, the Thor and Avengers movies, critically acclaimed independent films like Beautiful Girls and Garden State, comedies such as Mars Attacks! and Your Highness, serious dramas like Closer and Brothers, and thrilling, thought-provoking films like V for Vendetta and Annihilation.
Natalie Portman won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as a troubled ballerina in the 2010 film Black Swan. She received another Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Jacqueline Kennedy following her husband’s assassination in the film Jackie. In 2015, she also directed her first feature film, A Tale of Love and Darkness, which was based on the autobiographical novel by Amos Oz.
As a bit of a lifestyle observer, I always found their relationship fascinating! Natalie Portman married her Black Swan choreographer, Benjamin Millepied, back in 2012, and they built a beautiful family with their two children, Aleph and Amalia. Sadly, after over a decade together, they finalized their divorce earlier this year, in 2024.

I first really noticed Angus T. Jones as the sweet, but often overlooked, kid on Two and a Half Men. He played Jon Cryer’s son, and it was always fun seeing his character navigate his parents’ divorce, especially with Charlie Sheen as his uncle! It was pretty shocking, though, when a video came out a few years ago where he really criticized the show, even calling it “filth.” Turns out, it was part of a longer religious talk he did for a Seventh-day Adventist group called Forerunner Chronicles, based down in Alabama. It was a really strange and unexpected turn for him, and definitely made headlines!
Jones later apologized for not showing proper respect to his coworkers and for not recognizing how fortunate he was to have the opportunity he’d been given.
The actor soon left the series, but returned for the finale in 2015.
According to reports, Jones earned $350,000 per episode during his last season on the CBS sitcom. He recently told KHOU in Houston that the show often joked about serious real-world issues, and he felt like a “paid hypocrite” for participating in it despite his discomfort.
Before a small, unconfirmed role in the 2023 Max series Bookie, his most recent acting work was in Louis C.K.’s 2016 limited series Horace & Pete.
You know, it’s funny how life changes. I remember telling People magazine back in 2016 that my time at the University of Colorado at Boulder was pretty normal – just a regular college experience. But for a long time after that, I was really caught up in negative, ‘what if’ thinking. Thankfully, I’ve shifted gears! I’m really focusing on enjoying life and feeling good about where I am now. It’s like a huge weight has been lifted – I finally feel like I can move forward without constantly worrying about everything going wrong.

Daniel Radcliffe has successfully moved beyond his role as Harry Potter by taking on a diverse range of parts. He’s proven his acting range on stage in plays like Equus and The Cripple of Inishmaan, in the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and in films such as Kill Your Darlings, where he played Allen Ginsberg, and the quirky Swiss Army Man. He’s also impressed on television, portraying an opioid-addicted doctor in A Young Doctor’s Notebook.
Recently, he finished four seasons on the show Miracle Workers, starred as Weird Al Yankovic in the biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and returned to the stage in a Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along.
On a personal note, Radcliffe is dad to a son with longtime partner Erin Darke.

Jodie Foster began her acting career around age six with a role in the Mayberry R.F.D. series, a spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show. At just fourteen, she received her first Academy Award nomination for her performance in Taxi Driver, where she played a vulnerable young girl whose situation motivates Robert De Niro’s character to act violently. That same year, 1976, she also starred in the original Freaky Friday, a much lighter role that helped establish her as a popular young actress.
Jodie Foster balanced her studies with an acting career, achieving early success and winning her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1988’s The Accused, where she played a woman who bravely pursued legal action after a brutal attack. She then transitioned into directing with the 1991 film Little Man Tate. A year later, in 1992, she earned the Best Actress Oscar for her compelling performance as a determined FBI trainee in The Silence of the Lambs.
The acclaimed actress and filmmaker received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her lifetime achievements at the 2013 Golden Globes. More recently, she’s focused on directing for television, having directed episodes of popular shows like House of Cards, Black Mirror, and Orange Is the New Black. Some of her notable films from the 21st century include Panic Room, Inside Man, Elysium, Hotel Artemis, and The Mauritanian, for which she unexpectedly won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 2021.
She has two sons with her former partner, Cydney Bernard, and she married photographer and director Alexandra Hedison in 2014.

Given Jodie Foster’s own experience as a child actress, it’s not surprising she took Kristen Stewart under her wing while filming David Fincher’s 2002 thriller, Panic Room. Similar to Foster, Stewart has had a complicated relationship with fame, but it’s been amplified by the internet since she landed the breakthrough role of Bella Swan in the Twilight series around age 16.
Kristen Stewart recalled that Jodie Foster didn’t believe she’d stick with acting. In a 2019 interview with Stellar magazine, Stewart explained this wasn’t about Foster questioning her ability, but rather due to Foster’s own down-to-earth personality. “I enjoy my work,” Stewart said, “but I get why she’d have thought that about me when I was younger. I adore her.”
Since finishing the Twilight films, the actress and Chanel model has continued to work steadily. While she briefly attempted a Charlie’s Angels reboot in 2019, she’s mostly focused on smaller, more personal projects. These include critically acclaimed films like The Clouds of Sils Maria (which earned her a Cesar Award, the French equivalent of an Oscar – a first for an American actress), the atmospheric drama Personal Shopper, and films inspired by real people, Seberg and Spencer.
Following her public relationship with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart began dating women and later married Dylan Meyer in 2025.

Long before Josh Brolin became famous for his role as Thanos in the Marvel movies, and decades before he played a world-altering character, he started his acting career in 1985. He played the older brother, Brandon Walsh, in the classic film The Goonies – a cool, patient, yet caring character who looked out for his friends.
Oh my gosh, where do I even begin with Josh Brolin? After his early roles, he just kept popping up in everything! I loved him in Flirting With Disaster and Mimic, but then No Country for Old Men… that movie was incredible and seriously put him back on the map. He was amazing in American Gangster and then totally transformed himself to become George W. Bush in W.! But playing Dan White in Milk? Gut-wrenching and he deserved that Oscar nomination, honestly. Okay, so Jonah Hex wasn’t his best, but he bounced back with True Grit and then Sicario – so intense! And then… Deadpool 2! He’s so versatile. But then came Thanos! Seeing him under all that CGI in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame was just… iconic. And now Dune? Both parts one and two are masterpieces! I swear, this man is a cinematic genius and I’ll watch anything he’s in.
Josh Brolin has two children with his first wife, Alice Adair. He was then married to Diane Lane from 2004 to 2013. He married Kathryn Boyd in 2016, and they have two daughters together: Westlyn Reign Brolin, born in 2018, and Chapel Grace Brolin, born in December 2020.

She started her acting career at around age 10, appearing in films with Cher and Winona Ryder. She first appeared in the 1990 movie Mermaids, and the following year she starred as the darkly funny Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family.
Before launching into more complex roles, Christina Ricci starred in beloved 90s films like Casper and Now and Then. She then became known for portraying complicated characters in movies such as The Opposite of Sex, Buffalo ’66, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow, Prozac Nation, Pumpkin, and Monster. In Monster, she played the girlfriend of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a role famously portrayed by Charlize Theron, who won an Oscar for her performance.
Over the last three decades, Christina Ricci has consistently chosen bold and unique roles. From portraying a stylish flight attendant in the series Pan Am to enduring a challenging situation in Black Snake Moan, and embodying complex historical figures like ax murderer Lizzie Borden in The Lizzie Borden Chronicles and author Zelda Fitzgerald in Z: The Beginning of Everything, Ricci has consistently taken on fascinating and adventurous parts.
Ricci has two children: a son named Freddie with her former husband, James Heerdegen, and a daughter named Cleopatra with her current husband, Mark Hampton.
In October 2021, Yellowjackets actress Christina Ricci married hairdresser Mark Hampton. That December, they welcomed their daughter, Cleopatra.

Macaulay Culkin became a pop culture icon almost overnight with his famous scream in Home Alone when he was just ten years old. However, he’d been working steadily in television movies and films like Uncle Buck and Jacob’s Ladder since he was around five. After taking a break from acting following Richie Rich in 1994, he’s returned to the screen occasionally, often choosing smaller, but impactful, films like Party Monster and Saved. He’s also pursued passions as a musician and painter.
Macaulay Culkin, known for his voice work on Robot Chicken and a cameo as a barista on The Jim Gaffigan Show, is set to appear in the tenth season of American Horror Story, which is expected to premiere in 2021, assuming pandemic safety measures are in place.
The actor is engaged to Brenda Song and they have two sons. Their first son, Dakota Song Culkin, is named after the actor’s sister, Dakota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 2008. Their second son, Carson, made his first public appearance at his father’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on December 1, 2023, at just 12 months old.

Kieran Culkin started his acting career with a memorable role as Fuller, Kevin McCallister’s Pepsi-loving cousin, in the popular film Home Alone, which also launched his brother’s career.
Known for early roles in films like Father of the Bride, She’s All That, Igby Goes Down, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, he truly broke away from his teen idol image with his Emmy-winning performance as the sharp-tongued Roman Roy on Succession.
In 2025, Kieran had a breakthrough year, culminating in an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film A Real Pain.
He and his wife, Jazz Charton, have three children: Kinsey Sioux, Wilder Wolf, and a new baby who was announced in September 2025 by Kieran’s Succession co-star, Sarah Snook.

Dakota Fanning quickly transitioned from playing young versions of characters in shows like Ally McBeal and the movie I Am Sam to a starring role as the first female detective in the historical drama The Alienist. It might seem like she became famous overnight, but that wasn’t the case.
Okay, seriously, has anyone seen all the incredible work she’s done? For over twenty years, she’s been absolutely killing it! I mean, from Uptown Girls to the intense drama of Man on Fire, then Hide and Seek, and even massive films like War of the Worlds and the sweet Charlotte’s Web – she’s so versatile! And don’t even get me started on The Secret Life of Bees and, of course, the Twilight saga – she was amazing in those! Then there’s American Pastoral and, oh my gosh, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood! Playing Lynette ‘Squeaky’ Fromme? A real Charles Manson follower?! She completely transformed herself. It’s just… breathtaking. She deserves all the recognition in the world!
Dakota Fanning acted alongside her sister, Elle Fanning, in the film The Nightingale. She also received a Golden Globe nomination in 2025 for playing Marge Sherwood in the Netflix series Ripley.

Though she began her career playing a young version of her sister Dakota’s character in the film I Am Sam – known as “Lucy 2 years” – Elle Fanning has since established herself as a unique and successful actress with her own distinct style.
Elle started her career like many young actors, playing the children of established stars in films like Daddy Day Care, The Door in the Floor, Babel, and Reservation Road. She also appeared in popular TV shows, often guest-starring on CSI, Criminal Minds, House, Law & Order: SVU, and others – sometimes in roles she was likely too young to even fully understand. As she grew older, Elle continued to work in a wide variety of films, including family movies like We Bought a Zoo and Maleficent, young adult stories like Super 8 and Twixt, serious dramas like Trumbo and 20th Century Women, and even darker, more fantastical movies like The Neon Demon and The Beguiled.
She’s also taken on notable roles, portraying Mary Shelley in a movie about her life and Catherine the Great in the Hulu comedy series, The Great.

Since first becoming famous on the Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire, the actress and singer has matured. She successfully transitioned from that role into popular family films like Agent Cody Banks, Cheaper by the Dozen, and A Cinderella Story.
After a period without a major role, Hilary Duff has been thriving in Younger, playing a complex coworker to Sutton Foster’s character—a woman pretending to be a millennial—in the popular TV Land series, which will return for a seventh season. While a spin-off focusing on Duff’s Younger character, Kelsey, sounded promising, many longtime fans were especially eager to see her reprise her role as Lizzie in a planned Disney+ reboot. Sadly, those plans for the revival have been cancelled.
She has since starred in two seasons of How I Met Your Father.
Hilary Duff first married hockey player Mike Comrie, and they had a son named Luca before separating in 2014 and eventually divorcing. She then married songwriter Matthew Koma, and together they have three daughters: Banks Violet, Mae James, and Townes Meadow, who was born in May 2024.

Candace Cameron Bure, known as the older sister D.J. Tanner on the show Full House (which aired from 1987 to 1995), is also the younger sister of actor Kirk Cameron. Her character’s hairstyle became a popular trend for many 12-year-olds at the time.
She’s appeared in many TV movies, including some that tackled important issues. One example is the 1996 film No One Would Tell, which was based on the heartbreaking true story of a high school student murdered by her abusive boyfriend after months of silent suffering. It’s a story that remains deeply affecting even today.
Lately, Candace has found great success on television. After co-hosting The View for two seasons and reprising her role with the Tanner family in five seasons of Netflix’s Fuller House, she’s become a leading face of Hallmark Channel’s Christmas movies. She also stars in the network’s popular Aurora Teagarden mystery series, which is based on the books by Charlaine Harris.
In 2021, she and her husband, former NHL player Valeri Bure, marked their 25th wedding anniversary. They have three children together.

Jodie Sweetin, best known for playing Stephanie Tanner on Full House for eight seasons, faced challenges with substance abuse. She openly shared her experiences in her 2009 memoir, unSweetined.
Between 2002 and 2016, she was married three times, which often made headlines. Her short engagement to Justin Hodak also drew attention, especially after he violated a restraining order she had against him. In 2019, he was sentenced to over six years in prison for possessing a dangerous weapon and providing false evidence.
Having been sober since 2008, the mother of Zoie and Beatrix returned to the world of the Tanner family for five seasons of the Netflix show Fuller House. She’s also appeared in a number of Hallmark Channel movies, such as the 2019 Christmas film Merry and Bright and the romantic comedy Just Swipe.

The character of Michelle Tanner on the popular TV show Full House was actually played by twin sisters, starting when they were babies and continuing until she was a bright 6-year-old. They then used their fame to build a successful business, launching movies, clothing, books, and more – creating a whole Olsen brand.
After starring in 2004’s New York Minute, Mary-Kate continued acting with a role on the show Weeds and appearances in the films The Wackness and Beastly. Ashley, however, stepped away from acting. Today, both sisters are celebrated as fashion icons, having co-founded the award-winning brands The Row and Elizabeth & James.
Oh my gosh, can you believe it? Ashley finally had a baby in 2023 with Louis Eisner! It makes me so happy for them! And remember when she married Olivier Sarkozy way back in 2015? That felt like forever ago, and then sadly, she filed for divorce in 2020. It’s just… a lot to keep up with, but I’m here for it all!

Before Leonardo DiCaprio became a famous movie star, activist, and Oscar winner for The Revenant, he had a very different beginning. In 1991, he played a homeless teenager named Luke who was taken in by the Seaver family on the TV show Growing Pains. Even then, he was an actor with a remarkably youthful appearance—he was 16 and already had acting experience. DiCaprio quickly gained recognition, earning his first Oscar nomination for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. He became known for playing troubled young characters in films like A Boy’s Life, The Basketball Diaries, Marvin’s Room, and Romeo + Juliet.
He still kinda looked like a kid in Titanic, but at 22 he had reached full-on heartthrob status.
Over the last ten years, Leonardo DiCaprio has appeared in critically acclaimed films including Inception, The Wolf of Wall Street, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, The Revenant (for which he finally won his Best Actor Oscar), and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Accio, adulthood!
Emma Watson first gained recognition for her role as Hermione Granger in the eight Harry Potter films. Since then, she’s expanded her career to include films aimed at young adults, such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Bling Ring. She’s also acted alongside stars like Tom Hanks in The Circle, played leading roles in the live-action Beauty and the Beast and Little Women, and used her platform as a UN Goodwill Ambassador to champion women’s rights and gender equality globally.
Beyond acting, Watson has worked as a model for brands like Prada and Burberry, started a gin company with her brother Alex, and pursued her passion for writing by enrolling in a creative writing program at Oxford.

Neil Patrick Harris, originally from New Mexico, achieved early success with a Golden Globe nomination at age 15 for his first role in the 1988 TV movie Clara’s Heart. He played a withdrawn boy who forms a connection with his family’s housekeeper. However, his career could have easily taken a different turn after becoming known for playing a teenage genius doctor on the show Doogie Howser, M.D. – a fact he playfully acknowledged by poking fun at himself in the comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
After a period of slowing down due to working too hard early in his career in Hollywood, he remained active in theater, appearing in three Broadway productions. Eventually, he landed the perfect television role as the charming Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother, which led to four Emmy nominations. In 2010, he had a particularly successful year, winning two Emmys – one for co-producing the 2009 Tony Awards and another for a guest appearance on Glee, in addition to receiving three nominations.
This incredibly talented performer—a master of acting, singing, dancing, and magic—has hosted the Tony Awards four times, winning an Emmy as a producer for each show. He’s also hosted the Emmy Awards twice and the Oscars once, in 2015. In 2014, he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka, had twins, Gideon and Harper, through surrogacy in 2010. They got married in 2014.

Oh my gosh, I’ve been following Raven-Symoné forever! I first fell in love with her when she was this unbelievably adorable little girl, stealing every scene as Olivia on The Cosby Show. Seriously, she was the cutest! And then she was in all these amazing movies like The Little Rascals and both Doctor Dolittle films! But when she got her own show, That’s So Raven in 2003? That was it. I was completely hooked! Not only was she hilarious as this psychic teen with the most incredible style, but she was everywhere on Disney Channel! I mean, The Cheetah Girls, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Kim Possible, even Sonny With a Chance – she just popped up in everything, and I loved it!
After her show ended in 2007, Raven-Symoné continued to appear on television, with roles in shows like American Dad, Nashville, State of Georgia, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Master of None, and Drunk History. She also had a recurring part on Black-ish. In addition to acting, she co-hosted The View for three seasons and married Miranda Maday in June 2020.
