Michael J. Fox became famous in the 1980s for his roles as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future movies. However, he had to stop acting regularly in 2020. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the 1990s and shared the news publicly in 1998, but he continued working, often doing voice work like the character Stuart Little, or making cameo appearances as himself in comedic roles.
After a break, Michael J. Fox returned to television in 2018 with a five-episode appearance on Designated Survivor, followed by two episodes of The Good Fight in 2020. He then announced his retirement from acting. Since then, he’s been featured in the Emmy-winning documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie and voiced a character named “Michael J. The Fox” in the Disney sequel Zootopia 2. Now, after five years, details have been released about his first return to live-action acting.
Michael J. Fox Returns to Acting in 2026
Apple TV has unveiled the official trailer for Season 3 of Shrinking, the popular comedy series nominated for an Emmy. Created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel, and Brett Goldstein, the show stars Segel and Goldstein alongside Harrison Ford. Each season features special guest stars – past appearances include Jeff Daniels and Cobie Smulders – and Season 3 adds Michael J. Fox to that list. The trailer gives fans their first glimpse of Fox’s role in the new season.
For those who haven’t seen the first season of Shrinking, the show revealed that therapist Paul Rhoades, played by Jason Segel, has Parkinson’s Disease. Recently released footage from Season 3 shows Michael J. Fox, who also lives with Parkinson’s, filming a scene with Segel in what appears to be a doctor’s waiting room. In the scene, Fox asks Segel why he’s at the doctor, and Segel responds that it’s for Parkinson’s. This leads to a funny exchange, as Fox jokes that he’s just there for a haircut.
It’s not yet known whether Michael J. Fox is portraying himself – a world-renowned actor living with Parkinson’s disease – or a character with the condition in this upcoming episode. We’ll find out more when Season 3 of Shrinking premieres on Apple TV on January 28th. Regardless, everyone will likely be happy to see Michael J. Fox back on screen.
Michael J. Fox has spoken openly about why he stepped away from acting. He’s been struggling with speech problems that have worsened over time, as well as memory issues. In his 2020 memoir, he explained that his unreliable speech made it impossible to continue acting. It’s unknown whether this latest challenge will change his mind about retirement, but Fox has stated he is retired on multiple occasions.
