2025 was packed with blockbuster movies, which is great for movie fans, but it also meant some excellent films didn’t get the attention they deserved. While big comic book movies continued to be popular, the year also delivered fantastic films across many genres. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was a huge hit, receiving critical acclaim, performing well at the box office, and becoming a significant cultural moment. Unfortunately, with so many major releases, some other deserving movies were overlooked.
Although the year’s most talked-about movies of 2025 got a lot of praise, several other excellent films didn’t receive much attention. Throughout the year, a few truly great movies were overlooked, possibly due to limited availability, ineffective promotion, or bad luck with release dates. Whatever the reason, these films deserve to be seen by a wider audience, and hopefully will be discovered over time.
3) Twinless

Several highly-rated films from 2025, including Sinners and The Monkey, explored the theme of twins, but Twinless didn’t receive the same recognition. The film centers around two men who connect at a support group for people who have lost a twin. Starring Dylan O’Brien as Roman and written and directed by James Sweeney, who also plays Dennis, Twinless is a dark and funny psychological comedy with some surprising turns.
The film Twinless debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025, winning the Audience Award. It was released in theaters in September, but despite positive reviews, it didn’t reach a wide audience and didn’t get the recognition it deserved. It’s a smart and well-made movie that unfortunately got overshadowed by other, larger films released that year.
2) Caught Stealing

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Caught Stealing is based on the novel of the same name by Charlie Huston. The film features a stellar cast including Austin Butler, Matt Smith, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Liev Schreiber, and Vincent D’Onofrio, making it one of the most exciting ensemble films of 2025. The story centers on Henry Thompson, a retired baseball player who unexpectedly gets mixed up with New York City’s criminal underworld.
Despite a strong marketing campaign and generally positive reviews, the movie Caught Stealing didn’t do well at the box office and was quickly forgotten. This was a shame, because it’s a genuinely funny and clever crime comedy with a fantastic cast, and it really deserved a wider audience.
1) The Assessment

With several big science fiction films released in 2025, some of the year’s strongest sci-fi stories flew under the radar. One such film is The Assessment, starring Himesh Patel and Elizabeth Olsen as a married couple living in a tightly controlled, futuristic world. The story follows them as they are observed by Alicia Vikander, an assessor monitoring their behavior over a week. Released in theaters in March 2025, The Assessment is a gripping and suspenseful sci-fi thriller.
The actors at the heart of The Assessment are all well-regarded, and together they deliver a truly outstanding performance. The film offers a compelling and insightful look at the challenges of modern relationships, especially when children are involved. Sadly, The Assessment didn’t get the recognition it deserved and stands out as one of the most underrated films of 2025.
