While 2025 offered some truly outstanding TV shows, the year wasn’t necessarily a success for the television industry as a whole. Despite the popularity of certain programs, many other well-loved shows were unexpectedly cancelled. This trend reflects a growing problem in the industry, where studios are becoming increasingly focused on the bottom line, leading to promising shows being cut short before their time.
It feels like more and more good TV shows are being cancelled too soon, leaving fans disappointed. The rise of streaming services has really changed television, and it seems like shows are getting cancelled more often now than in the past. 2025 was another year where several promising shows were cut short, despite having plenty of story left to tell.
7) Resident Alien
Over its four seasons and 44 episodes, Resident Alien became a well-regarded science fiction series, known for its compelling alien character. While the show was cancelled in 2025, it managed to wrap up its story in a satisfying way. Although fans could have enjoyed more seasons of the show, its cancellation isn’t devastating, considering it had a good run and a relatively complete narrative.
6) The Residence
Netflix has become known over the last ten years for cancelling shows prematurely, and 2025 continued that trend. One of their newer, potentially successful series, The Residence, was cancelled after just one season. The show, starring Uzo Aduba (known from Orange is the New Black), followed a quirky detective as she investigated a murder within the White House. Despite being a captivating and well-acted mystery with comedic elements, The Residence didn’t get the opportunity to develop further.
5) Based on a True Story
The TV show Based on a True Story, starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina, seemed destined for success. It followed a married couple who launch a true crime podcast to investigate a serial killer. The show premiered in 2023, with a second season arriving in late 2024. It cleverly combined the popular trends of true crime and podcasts with comedy and mystery, and featured a talented cast. However, despite this promising start, the show was unexpectedly cancelled in 2025 before it could reach its full potential.
4) Mythic Quest
As a huge TV fan, I always felt like Mythic Quest was seriously underrated. It never quite got the attention it deserved, even though it managed to run for four seasons and 40 episodes. It’s such a shame they cancelled it in April 2025 – the show had so much more story to tell and could have easily kept going! It feels like just another casualty of the tough TV landscape we saw in 2025, which saw a lot of good shows get the axe.
3) The Wheel of Time
With so many TV shows ending in 2025, the cancellation of The Wheel of Time is just one of many. While it would have been big news in the past, the show—based on Robert Jordan’s acclaimed fantasy novels—only lasted three seasons. Though beautifully made, the series was cut short, finishing long before it could adapt the entire book saga.
2) The Franchise
Debuting on HBO in October 2024, The Franchise was a comedy series that playfully poked fun at the world of superhero movies – including those from Marvel, DC, and other comic book franchises. The show followed the people making a fictional superhero film and received positive reviews for its humor and its gentle satire of the film industry. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after just one season in January 2025, leaving many storylines unfinished despite its promise.
1) Neighbours
Even if you’re not familiar with the Australian TV show Neighbours, its cancellation in 2025 was a big shock for many. The show, which has followed life on Ramsay Street since 1985, has been a regular on television screens worldwide. While 40 years is a great run, fans are deeply disappointed because Neighbours had clearly proven its lasting popularity.
