Landman Season 2 Just Became an Even Better Yellowstone Replacement

Season 2 of Landman has solidified the show as a strong successor to Yellowstone, the hugely popular series starring Kevin Costner. Both dramas were created by Taylor Sheridan, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Hell or High Water, for which he won an Oscar in 2017.

In Landman, Thornton stars as Tommy Norris. Andy Garcia plays Gallino, a formidable crime boss, and Demi Moore portrays Cami Miller, who took over her husband Monty Miller’s (played by Jon Hamm) business after his death. Season 2 of Landman focuses on Cami and Gallino, but other characters are also starting to play increasingly important roles.

Landman Season 2 Has A Replacement For Yellowstone’s Cowboys

Season 2 of Landman delves deeper into the lives of the oil workers, building on their stories throughout the season. This culminates in Episode 7, where a party at Boss (Mustafa Speaks)’s home celebrates two decades of service with M-Tex Oil, bringing everyone together.

The party scene in “Forever Is an Instant” doesn’t include any characters from the main story. Although Tommy was expected to be there and is talked about, the episode focuses less on him and gives the engineers and oil rig workers a stronger presence. This approach is comparable to how the cowboys on the Yellowstone Ranch are portrayed.

The cowboys of Yellowstone—including characters like Rip Wheeler, Lloyd Pierce, Jimmy, Ryan, Colby, and Teeter—played a vital role in the show. They were deeply involved in the day-to-day workings of the ranch, often more so than John Dutton, and offered a unique perspective on life and the ranch’s culture.

The show Landman is becoming more compelling by featuring the experiences of the oil rig workers themselves, much like its original series did. Following a gas leak incident, the show has focused more on characters like Dale Bradley (James Jordan), Boss, Ben “BR” Reynolds (Caleb Martin), and a new worker named Russ “King” Fisher (Dougie Hall).

Landman Must Avoid Repeating Yellowstone’s Series-Ending Mistakes

The story also features Jerrell Teague (played by Elijah Collins), an oil field worker who lost his sight after a dangerous hydrogen sulfide gas leak at an old well. He woke up blind, and it’s currently unclear if his vision will return.

Similar to the character-driven storytelling in shows like Yellowstone, the series Landman is expanding its focus to include broader narratives about the lives of rig workers. This goes beyond simply showing the details of M-Tex Oil’s leaders, like president Tommy Norris, and offers a wider view of the industry as a whole. Ultimately, Landman could benefit from following this approach even more.

Although the cowboys were vital to the ranch and the show’s success, many viewers felt the finale focused on them for too long, leaving insufficient time to wrap up the main story about the Dutton family – the core of the series.

The show Landman should continue to prioritize the story of Tommy Norris and his family in future seasons. Now that viewers have a better understanding of the characters and their world, that storyline can unfold over time. However, Landman has the potential to surpass Yellowstone if it learns from that show’s errors.
