Season 5 of Stranger Things quietly explained what happened to Vickie, hinting that her relationship with Robin didn’t last. Despite having a growing number of characters, the final season had surprisingly few deaths. Vickie, Robin’s girlfriend from Season 4, had a larger part to play this season, acting as a skeptical outsider pulled into the supernatural events.
Robin and Vickie are quite alike – they both tend to talk a lot and say whatever’s on their minds. It’s surprising Robin kept the secret about Hawkins hidden for as long as she did! However, Robin crossed a line when she started stealing drugs from the hospital, leading Vickie to initially think she had a drug problem – until the Demodogs showed up. Vickie eventually experienced the Upside Down firsthand, even jokingly questioning whether the air was breathable. But she wasn’t present at the end of Stranger Things Season 5, and that made sense given the circumstances.
It Looks as Though Robin and Vickie Have Broken Up
The fifth season features an extended ending set in May 1989, eighteen months after the main events. Dustin, Mike, Will, Lucas, and Max are graduating, bringing the Hawkins group back together to celebrate. It’s a rare opportunity for Robin, Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan to reconnect, and they share drinks on the roof of the WSQK building. We find out what everyone has been up to since defeating Vecna and the Mind Flayer, though Robin keeps details about her personal life private.
Robin makes a quick reference to past issues that kept the group separated, specifically mentioning “overbearing significant others,” which is widely understood to be about Vickie. This hints that Robin and Vickie’s relationship faded, probably because Robin felt Vickie was too controlling. However, Vickie’s reaction is understandable considering she discovered Robin had been putting herself in danger in other dimensions – that kind of stress is difficult for any relationship to withstand.
Unlike other characters who faced the dangers of the Upside Down, Vickie doesn’t get a satisfying resolution to her story. While she shared similarities with Robin, she didn’t possess the same drive to become a hero, and that ultimately set her apart. The show simply moved on without fully concluding her storyline, which feels somewhat abrupt and unfair.
