Red Eye season 2 airs huge episode 5 twist for [spoiler] in early ITVX release – as star speaks out

Viewers of the drama Red Eye were shocked and excited to see a second season appear suddenly on ITVX yesterday, New Year’s Day. The return had been kept completely under wraps until the new episodes were released.

Richard Armitage returns as Dr. Matthew Nolan in this week’s episode, after not being initially listed among the returning cast. He helps Jess Li (played by Jemma Moore) when she finds herself in a difficult situation.

Matthew had a terrifying experience the day before, flying with his sister Hana – who was also his police guard – on a plane that someone had deliberately damaged during their extradition flight.

While all this was happening, Jess was investigating Matthew’s history and discovered a key detail explaining why someone had falsely accused him of a crime.

Because of everything that had happened before, Jess naturally turned to Nolan for help when Ruth Banks, an MI5 agent (played by Cash Holland), was in a dangerous situation – it was, as Armitage put it, a gut reaction.

Armitage explained that the man was moments away from enjoying a glass of red wine when the doorbell rang. He was immediately pulled into a crisis, forced to treat a life-threatening gunshot wound and perform an emergency blood transfusion right there at his dining room table, improvising with whatever equipment he could find.

He can essentially perform complex emergency surgery using just basic supplies – saline solution from his refrigerator and a suture kit he carries with him. It really highlights his skill and resourcefulness!

The actor was disappointed to learn that his character likely wouldn’t be back for a second season of Red Eye, but he was very happy for everyone else involved in the show.

Once writer Peter A. Dowling planned Matthew’s return to the show, the team worked hard to keep it a surprise, even from the other actors. On paperwork and schedules, the character was simply listed as ‘The Professor’.

You know, I’m definitely open to coming back for another ‘Red Eye’ if they decide to make a third season! I was joking around about how maybe future installments could really hit their stride. But honestly, I’d love to revisit the character – though I haven’t heard anything about a renewal yet.

Armitage might be interested in working with more of his old colleagues, as he admitted he didn’t have a chance to catch up with everyone while filming his quick cameo. However, he praised the cast and crew of Red Eye, calling them “absolute troopers.”

He described his work on the second season as feeling like a chaotic but enjoyable family reunion, complete with injuries, medical equipment, and realistic special effects.

Red Eye is available to stream on ITVX now.
