- 2019: Days Gone
- 2020: Ghost of Tsushima
- 2021: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

And so, without further ado, here’s your top 20…
Here’s a look at the current rankings, based on votes received: 20. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter – 121 votes (2
Bronze Trophy: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – 420 votes (6
If an RPG is truly engaging and well-made, it will almost always attract a dedicated fanbase – players who spend a significant amount of time, often dozens or even hundreds of hours, deeply involved in the game.
As a huge fan, I can honestly say Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is one of the best games of the year! It’s a fantastic sequel to the original, and when it’s good, it’s really good – totally captivating and immersive.
Okay, so I started playing this game as Henry, and honestly, it’s been a wild ride. His journey to get back on his feet is full of these amazing little stories and moments that just mess with your head – sometimes in a really funny, everyday way. It’s set in the past, and it’s not going to appeal to everyone, but if you give it a chance and really get into it, you’ll be hooked. Seriously, it’s like getting stuck in a huge, messy mud puddle – you know you should probably stop, but you just… can’t!
Silver Trophy: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach – 607 votes (8
Despite being built on the foundation of the original Death Stranding, the sequel from Kojima Productions consistently delivers unexpected moments. It’s a genuinely stunning game, and that applies to many different aspects of the experience.
Death Stranding 2 doesn’t hold back, offering a truly unforgettable PS5 experience with its wild story and over-the-top boss battles.
Death Stranding 2 improves on the first game by offering a more open and flexible gameplay experience. It avoids lengthy, complicated cutscenes that slowed down the original, and confidently delivers its unique and highly refined style.
Gold Trophy: Ghost of Yotei – 829 votes (11
There was some initial concern when Sucker Punch decided to move beyond the story of Jin Sakai and set their new game, Ghost of Yotei, hundreds of years later in Japanese history. However, the game’s inclusion on this ‘Game of the Year’ list proves it was a successful decision.
Okay, so this is the second game in the series, and honestly, it’s really good! They took everything people loved about the first one and just made it more. Exploring the world feels so much more natural now, and they’ve really upped the combat with a bunch of cool new weapons. But the boss fights? Wow, those are seriously intense! You’ll be on the edge of your seat, I promise.
Yotei offers a seamless and immersive open-world experience that’s hard to criticize. Similar to the previous game, it masterfully blends peaceful, contemplative moments with intense combat, creating a stunning and well-made samurai story.
Platinum Trophy: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – 946 votes (12
Okay, so here’s something really cool – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just made history! It’s the first game not published by Sony to win our readers’ Game of the Year award. As a long-time fan, I think that really says something special about how amazing this game is!
Okay, so the RPG didn’t crush the competition – Ghost of Yotei was pretty close in the voting. But honestly, this year had SO many amazing games come out. To win against that kind of lineup? That’s seriously impressive, and I’m really happy it took the top spot.
When Expedition 33 was first announced, it seemed like it would be something truly remarkable, and anticipation grew as the release date neared. However, it quickly became clear that the final product surpassed even the most optimistic predictions.
The game successfully blended a captivating European atmosphere with the familiar framework of Japanese role-playing games, exceeding all expectations for developer Sandfall Interactive. It’s a remarkable achievement, delivering a moving story, lovable characters, unique artwork, exciting battles, and an unforgettable soundtrack, all created with a surprisingly small budget.
In other words, a worthy winner.
What do you think of Push Square’s list of the top 20 PlayStation 5 games for 2025? Do you feel any great games were left out? Thanks to everyone who participated in the voting, and please keep the discussion friendly in the comments!
