So, I’ve been following this closely as a movie fan. Netflix bought Warner Bros. and said they wanted to continue with the traditional theatrical releases, which was great news. But a recent report suggests that might not be entirely true. Even with everyone rushing to see the Stranger Things finale on the big screen, Netflix seems hesitant to give their new movies a proper run in theaters, which is a little disappointing to hear.
Sources speaking with Deadline report that Netflix is considering a very short, 17-day release in movie theaters for its films if its acquisition of Warner Bros. is finalized. This could significantly hurt traditional cinemas, as audiences might choose to wait just over two weeks to watch the movie on Netflix instead of going to theaters. Currently, most movies play in theaters for between 30 and 45 days, with digital rental and purchase options usually available before streaming. However, Netflix would likely skip those digital options and release films directly to its streaming service after the 17-day theatrical run.
The recent decision to shorten the time movies are shown in theaters to just two weeks suggests Netflix hasn’t changed its opinion about them. CEO Ted Sarandos previously called the theatrical experience outdated and even said Netflix was rescuing Hollywood. While he’s softened that stance since partnering with Warner Bros., it’s not surprising that Netflix isn’t fully committed to theaters, given that streaming is its primary focus.
Is Netflix Actually “Deeply Committed” To Releasing Movies in Theaters?
