3 Reasons Tokyo Ghoul Deserves an Anime Remake

Over the past decade, Tokyo Ghoul has become a notably controversial anime. The series originally aired in 2014, followed by a second season called Tokyo Ghoul √A in 2015. It concluded in 2018 with Tokyo Ghoul:re, which was split into two parts and served as seasons three and four. Tokyo Ghoul gained popularity for its dark, realistic style and frequent violence. In many ways, it paved the way for more recent, gritty anime that break away from typical action-adventure stories.

The first season of Tokyo Ghoul was well-received by fans and those familiar with the original manga. However, later seasons were widely criticized as being poor adaptations of the source material. This disappointment has led fans to call for a reboot, hoping Tokyo Ghoul can finally live up to its potential. A remake of Tokyo Ghoul could really shine with these newer techniques, especially when animating the intense fight scenes and the unique movements of the Ghouls’ Kagune. Seeing Kaneki’s battle with Jason updated with modern animation would be a major highlight for fans, and would allow for more faithful adaptations of the manga’s action.

2) Failure to Portray Themes

A common criticism of the Tokyo Ghoul anime is that it doesn’t capture the same dark and thought-provoking atmosphere as the original manga. The manga is famous for using horror elements to explore deep questions about what it means to be human and the complexities of right and wrong. The main character, Ken Kaneki, represents this internal conflict, struggling with his capacity for both good and evil as he tries to protect those he loves. While Tokyo Ghoul features a lot of violence and gore, these are actually meant to highlight the story’s core message of finding redemption and healing in a cruel world. Unfortunately, the anime adaptation didn’t fully explore these themes, and some important scenes and storylines were removed. This resulted in an anime that felt fragmented and failed to connect with viewers as deeply as the manga.

Like many anime that could benefit from a fresh start, the biggest problem with the Tokyo Ghoul anime is how much it strayed from the original manga story. The first season made some small changes, but things really went off course afterward. Tokyo Ghoul √A completely invented its own story, ignoring important character growth and world-building details from the manga. While Tokyo Ghoul:re attempted to get back on track, the damage was already done, as the anime was still built around a plot that wasn’t in the source material. Even the third and fourth seasons cut out crucial scenes from the manga and tried to cram too much into each episode, leading to a rushed and uneven pace. A reboot could finally adapt the manga properly, with a good flow, faithful storylines, and fully developed characters.
