The new movie, Wicked: For Good, offers a fresh perspective on the classic story of The Wizard of Oz. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked, which itself reimagines L. Frank Baum’s original tale, the film explores the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the two-part adaptation centers on the unexpected friendship between Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). Elphaba, a uniquely gifted magic user, is ostracized in Oz because of her green skin. When she tries to protect the animals of Oz, the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) spread rumors to make people believe she is evil. Throughout the challenges she faces in Wicked: For Good, Elphaba performs an uplifting song that pays tribute to The Wizard of Oz.
The song “No Place Like Home” references the famous scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy (Judy Garland) attempts to return to Kansas. The title is a nod to Dorothy’s repeated line, “There’s no place like home,” which she says while clicking her heels. Interestingly, this song and “The Girl in the Bubble” were specifically written for the film Wicked: For Good and weren’t part of the original Broadway show. In Wicked: For Good, “No Place Like Home” carries a different meaning than in The Wizard of Oz, and it deeply connects Elphaba’s story to the main ideas of the Wicked narrative.
How Wicked: For Good Changes The Wizard of Oz‘s Meaning of “There’s No Place Like Home”

“No Place Like Home” is a key moment for Elphaba after her powerful song, “Defying Gravity,” in the musical Wicked. As animals leave Oz, Elphaba urges them to defend their home and stay. This scene in Wicked: For Good dramatically changes the meaning of the famous line from The Wizard of Oz. Like Dorothy, who deeply wants to return to Kansas because she cherishes her loved ones and familiar places, Elphaba emphasizes the importance of home. Even the wonders of Oz and new friendships can’t diminish Dorothy’s, or the animals’, love for where they belong.
In Wicked: For Good, the song “No Place Like Home” isn’t about wanting to go home, but about choosing to stay and fight for what’s right. When Elphaba says Oz belongs to all creatures who have been rejected, it’s a hopeful message during difficult times. Elphaba identifies with these animals, and her support of them in the song creates a truly inspiring moment. Wicked: For Good cleverly acknowledges the original meaning of “No Place Like Home” from The Wizard of Oz, but also gives it a new, more profound meaning. While The Wizard of Oz emphasizes appreciating home, Wicked: For Good focuses on defending it.
“No Place Like Home” Is a Great Addition to Wicked: For Good

“No Place Like Home” might not be as memorable as songs like “Wonderful” or as evocative as “As Long as You’re Mine,” but it still works within the story of Wicked: For Good. Both the book and the musical explore important political ideas about how groups are unfairly blamed and how propaganda is used by controlling governments. The difficulty of fighting against a powerful, unfair system is shown through Elphaba’s struggle to reveal the Wizard’s dishonesty and prove her innocence.
Despite everything, Elphaba remains committed to saving the animals of Oz. Her staged death and Glinda’s increasing power actually help bring about positive change. Like many stories inspired by real-world events, Wicked and Wicked: For Good warn us against being too comfortable with the status quo and accepting prejudice, emphasizing the importance of building a fairer world. The song “No Place Like Home” powerfully highlights the struggles of Elphaba and the animals, while also offering a fresh perspective on the idea of ‘home’ as originally presented in The Wizard of Oz.
