A classic PlayStation 1 RPG from Square Enix, originally released in 1998, is getting a remake next month. However, 2026 is already shaping up to be a huge year for gaming, with major titles like Grand Theft Auto VI leading the charge. Other highly anticipated games include Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, Control: Resonant, Blood of the Dawnwalker, Saros, Gears of War: E-Day, Pragmata, Fable, Forza Horizon 6, Marvel’s Wolverine, The Duskbloods, Phantom Blade, and many more. While there’s a lot to look forward to for all gamers, those seeking a strong dose of nostalgia should mark February 5, 2026, as the release date for this PS1 remake.
On February 5th, Square Enix will release Dragon Quest VII Reimagined on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. This is a remastered version of the classic RPG Dragon Quest VII, originally released for the PlayStation 1 in 2000.
The Second Remake of the Classic Square Enix Game
Many players might not realize that the recent remake of Dragon Quest VII isn’t the first one. It was originally remade for the 3DS in Japan back in 2013, and that version finally came to the West in 2016. Square Enix did a great job with this last remake – some even consider it an improvement over the original, as it received a slightly higher score of 81 on Metacritic compared to the original’s 78. However, it’s worth remembering that game scores tended to be lower in the past due to stricter review standards.
What’s New With the 2026 Remake
This 2026 remake isn’t building on previous remakes; instead, it’s a complete reimagining of the original 2000 game. It features a brand-new diorama-inspired art style, a story that stays true to the source material but with improved flow, and a completely redesigned combat system. Players can also look forward to new optional quests and modern updates to make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.
Not the Best Classic Square Enix RPG
While Dragon Quest VII isn’t considered the best in the Dragon Quest series, or even the best classic RPG from Square Enix, the original game hasn’t aged well. This remake is a welcome update, but it’s unclear how much demand there will be for it. Even with modern improvements, it’s still a traditional RPG experience that likely won’t attract many new players. We anticipate reviews will reflect this, remaining similar to those of the original.
