Wow, everyone was so focused on the end of Stranger Things with season 5 – and rightfully so! It was a huge deal. I almost missed that Netflix added a new true crime series, but it’s been climbing the charts ever since. It’s become a total hit really quickly, and I’m glad I finally checked it out!
The new true crime film, Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story, is currently the most popular movie on Netflix, according to FlixPatrol. It quickly climbed to the top, surpassing films like Man on Fire, Picture Perfect 2, Wrath of Man, Ford v Ferrari, and even Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The documentary’s compelling story and the impact it had on people’s lives explain its widespread appeal.
What Is Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story About?
The documentary Evil Influencer tells the true story of Jodi Hildebrandt and Ruby Franke, who were arrested after Franke’s children were found severely neglected. The film shows the dramatic rescue and then details how Franke and Hildebrandt met and the disturbing events that led to their arrest.
Ruby Franke, a social media influencer, documented her family life with her husband, Kevin Franke, in online videos. After meeting Lori Hildebrandt, a life coach and the founder of ConneXions, Hildebrandt became increasingly involved in Franke’s life. This involvement created an unsafe environment for Franke’s children, eventually leading to a desperate situation where her 12-year-old son ran to a neighbor asking for help and revealed that he and his 9-year-old sister had been held captive at Hildebrandt’s house.
When the story first broke, most of the news focused on Ruby Franke. Director Skye Borgman explained to TUDUM that initially, everyone was talking about “Ruby Franke, Ruby Franke, Ruby Franke.” However, as Borgman investigated further, she discovered that Jodi Hildebrandt was actually the key figure in the situation.
According to Borgman, the most telling part of the story wasn’t that the boy ran away from home, but that he escaped from Jodi Hildebrandt’s house – the place where he was being abused. He described this as the key event that started everything unfolding, and the most disturbing aspect of the case.
