James Gunn, the head of the new DC Universe, hasn’t started thinking about who will play Wonder Woman yet, but an actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a strong suggestion. Gunn began building the DCU with the unusual series Creature Commandos, quickly followed by Superman and a second season of Peacemaker. He has several projects planned for the coming years, including Supergirl, a Lanterns TV show, and a horror film about Batman villain Clayface. Wonder Woman is further down the line, but one MCU star already has a great idea for who should take on the role.
While promoting his new spy series, The Copenhagen Test, Simu Liu recently told JoBlo that he thinks his co-star, Melissa Barrera, would be an excellent choice to play Wonder Woman in the DC Universe. Liu, known for his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, praised Barrera’s potential for the iconic role.
Simu Liu praised the actress, saying she consistently challenges herself. He noted that during stunt training, she reminded him of Wonder Woman, adding, ‘She’s just incredibly impressive.’
James Gunn Says He Still Has No Wonder Woman In Mind

James Gunn has stated that the role of Wonder Woman hasn’t been cast yet, and he’s waiting for the perfect moment to make a decision. He used a similar approach when casting Brainiac for the upcoming Superman movie, prioritizing performance in screen tests over online speculation. Gunn wants to avoid rushing any decisions in the new DC Universe and ensure he’s completely happy with each choice. He’ll announce the Wonder Woman casting when he feels the time is right.
James Gunn was recently asked about potential casting news for Wonder Woman. Someone suggested casting might happen in January 2026, but Gunn simply replied, “Nope.” Despite this, Wonder Woman is a crucial character for the new DC Universe, considered by Gunn to be one of its core four heroes, alongside Batman, Superman, and Supergirl. Gunn stated he’s happy with the progress on two of these characters and is currently working on the other two.
The new DC Universe faces a challenge with actress Melissa Barrera, who has experienced some setbacks in her career recently. Many hope her upcoming film, The Copenhagen Test, will help revitalize her profile. Barrera starred as Sam Carpenter in the Scream reboot films (2022 and 2023), bringing a new energy to the franchise alongside Jenna Ortega. Unfortunately, Barrera was let go from the Scream series due to her social media posts regarding the Gaza war, and Jenna Ortega subsequently left the franchise as well.
It’s noteworthy that Gal Gadot, who previously played Wonder Woman, also received backlash for speaking out about conflicts, and it appears this impacted her career. Despite this, like Barrera, Gadot remained committed to supporting refugees affected by the war, prioritizing the needs of civilians over defending governments – a stance consistent with the values often portrayed by her Wonder Woman character.
