The way people go to the movies has changed a lot, but one thing remains consistent: it’s never a good idea to underestimate James Cameron. He’s become a dominant force in filmmaking, with three of his movies – released over three different decades – earning over $2 billion worldwide. That’s an incredible feat, considering only seven films have ever reached that milestone, and Cameron directed nearly half of them. So, when Avatar: Fire and Ash came out, everyone expected it to be a huge hit in 2025. While it’s not performing quite as quickly as the previous Avatar movie, The Way of Water, it’s still attracting large audiences and helping Cameron continue to break box office records.
As reported by Variety, Avatar: Fire and Ash has officially earned over $1 billion worldwide. So far, it’s made $306 million in the United States and $771.1 million internationally, bringing its total to $1.083 billion. This makes director James Cameron the first ever to direct four films that have each grossed over $1 billion, and Fire and Ash reached this milestone in just 18 days.
Can Avatar: Fire and Ash Reach $2 Billion Worldwide?

With Fire and Ash now exceeding $1 billion in earnings, the big question is whether it can reach the $2 billion mark, like the other Avatar films. January is typically a slow month for new movie releases, and Fire and Ash doesn’t face much strong competition. While films like Mercy starring Chris Pratt and Sam Raimi’s horror movie Send Help are coming out, none have the broad appeal of a major science fiction blockbuster directed by a well-known director. The original Avatar movies stayed popular for weeks, allowing them to reach $2 billion, and Fire and Ash has the potential to do the same.
As a big movie fan, I’m keeping a close eye on how Fire and Ash is performing, and one thing that’s starting to worry me is its box office numbers. Compared to Avatar: The Way of Water, which had already made almost $447 million domestically after just 18 days, Fire and Ash seems to be trailing behind. While it’s currently number one, realistically, it’s going to be tough for it to catch up to The Way of Water‘s domestic earnings. International numbers are really crucial for a film like this, and every bit of revenue counts. If Fire and Ash continues to lag behind in any area, it might not reach that coveted $2 billion milestone, which would be a shame.
While a disappointing result wouldn’t ruin things completely, it will be interesting to see how the box office performance of Fire and Ash influences James Cameron’s plans for future Avatar movies. He’s stated several times that he’s watching the profits closely to decide when to start working on Avatar 4. Although $1 billion is a significant amount, these films are incredibly costly to make. Fire and Ash cost between $350 and $400 million to produce, meaning it needed to earn a lot just to cover its expenses. If it doesn’t perform as well as the previous Avatar films, Cameron might pause development to find more cost-effective production methods or allow audience interest to build again. The film also has the lowest score on Rotten Tomatoes of any in the Avatar series, which could suggest that audiences are losing interest.
I’m really glad to see Avatar: The Seed Bearer doing so well! Even if James Cameron decides not to make a fourth Avatar movie, Fire and Ash is going to give Disney a fantastic end to the year. It’s actually pretty amazing – despite all the worry about Disney’s box office, they still had the only three movies this year that made over a billion dollars worldwide! They definitely need to get Marvel and Pixar back on track after some recent letdowns, but with Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash both being huge hits, it makes those failures a little easier to handle. Hopefully, if Cameron is willing, we’ll be going back to Pandora again before we know it!
