Surviving the Titanic sinking…..
Everyone thought James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ would be a box office flop, given how far over budget it went – mirroring the disaster depicted in the film. However, it became a massive success. Recently, while promoting ‘Avatar 3’, Cameron was asked a thought-provoking question about surviving the Titanic sinking. While it’s well-known the captain didn’t actually shoot himself as shown in the movie, a common misconception is that Second Officer Charles Lightoller misinterpreted the order of “women and children first” to mean “women and children only.” This led to some lifeboats leaving with empty seats. Cameron was then asked, “If you were a second-class passenger on the Titanic when it struck an iceberg, what would your strategy for survival be?”
We focused on second-class passengers because evidence suggests third-class passengers were often confined to their cabins while first-class passengers were given priority access to lifeboats. We also looked at men traveling alone, as they would likely be more concerned with their own survival than men traveling with families who would naturally prioritize their loved ones.
So how would he be surviving the Titanic sinking?
The director often considers different scenarios related to the Titanic. He explained that he likes to imagine, knowing what we do now, how he would save everyone if he could advise the captain. He also enjoys a thought experiment: what if a time traveler went back to witness the sinking, but their return device failed, leaving them stranded on the ship and facing a real fight for survival?
He realized staying with the broken door wasn’t the solution. He explained that most people wouldn’t have been brave enough to jump into the water, as they couldn’t accept the ship was truly sinking. However, if they knew the ship was going down and weren’t on a lifeboat, the best chance was to jump into the water as the boat launched. Once the boats rowed away, though, you were in a hopeless situation. He reasoned that with so many people watching, they wouldn’t let anyone drown when the Titanic was still visible, and the officers would have no choice but to pull them aboard. He specifically mentioned boat number four as an example where this might have happened.
So, that’s James Cameron’s take on how he would survive the Titanic disaster – according to himself!
