Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things 5, episode 8
Even though the main story of Stranger Things has concluded, Netflix and the creators, the Duffer Brothers, still plan to tell more stories within this universe. They’ve already hinted at a spin-off series, and have begun laying the groundwork for it.
The final season of Stranger Things appropriately concentrated on concluding the story that started back in 2016. The creators, the Duffer brothers, have also recently shared details about a scene that hints at their upcoming spin-off series. Here’s a complete look at that scene and everything else we know about the new show so far.

The final episode of Stranger Things features a flashback to Henry Creel’s difficult childhood in Nevada. It shows him finding a strange man with a locked briefcase inside a cave near his home.
After getting shot in the hand, young Henry overpowers the man who shot him and discovers a mysterious black rock inside the case. This rock glows and enters Henry’s wound, marking his initial connection to The Mind Flayer within The Abyss. The creators, The Duffer Brothers, have since revealed to Variety that this rock will be a central element in their planned spin-off series.
Building on storylines introduced in the stage play The First Shadow, discovering the origins and purpose of this stone promises to significantly enrich the world of Stranger Things and open up exciting new possibilities.
How The Upcoming Stranger Things Spinoff Can Answer Lingering Lore Questions
The final season of Stranger Things offered a heartwarming and conclusive end for most characters, but it left some larger questions about the show’s overall story unanswered. A spin-off focusing on the black rock and its connection to the Mind Flayer could help explain these remaining mysteries.
The new show might actually be a prequel, revealing more about Doctor Brenner’s work in Nevada and the experiments his father conducted on the USS Eldridge. According to information in The First Shadow, the elder Brenner and his team were the first humans to encounter the Mind Flayer, which then influenced his son’s research in Nevada and ultimately, the experiments in Hawkins.
We also learn from The First Shadow that the scientist who met Henry took the stone from a secret project in Nevada run by Brenner and was originally a defector from Russia. The upcoming spin-off series might explore this Russian storyline, which wasn’t fully developed in the fifth season of Stranger Things.
The new series has a chance to explore unanswered questions about the show’s backstory, and it can do so without needing to focus on the town of Hawkins or the original characters.
Will The Stranger Things Spinoff Feature Returning Characters?
Since the new story takes place many years before the original Stranger Things, we probably won’t see many of the same characters. The creators have confirmed this, stating the spin-off will have an entirely new cast and be set in a different town. This emphasizes that it’s a fresh story, not a direct continuation or sequel to the original series.
That doesn’t mean we won’t see younger versions of important characters, though. If the black rock remains central to the story, it seems likely we’ll see a younger Brenner at some point, and we might also learn more about his father’s history.
Surprisingly, one of the best things about this new Stranger Things spin-off is that it doesn’t rely on familiar faces. This allows the show to feel truly original and take bigger chances with its new characters and storyline. Without the weight of expectation, it can forge its own path.
Everything Else We Know About The Stranger Things Spinoff

I’ve been fascinated by everything coming out about the ‘Stranger Things’ spin-off, especially learning the black stone seems to be really important. But honestly, the Duffer Brothers are keeping most of the bigger picture under wraps, and I think that’s smart – it’s building the suspense! They’ve been deliberately unclear about where the story is headed, and I’m totally okay with that.
I’m so excited for what’s next! While that strange rock from the briefcase is a big mystery, the creators have hinted at something even bigger – a whole new town with completely new characters and a story that isn’t connected to Hawkins or the Upside Down. It sounds like they’re building something completely fresh after five seasons of Stranger Things, and I can’t wait to see where it goes!
The Duffer Brothers won’t be directly running the new show, but they’re still heavily involved, currently working on the story. This should give the spin-off a unique feel with new creative perspectives, while still ensuring it fits within the established world they created and maintains its core identity.
Currently, we don’t know much about the upcoming Stranger Things spin-off. However, if it follows through on the hints about the briefcase and the black stone connecting to the Mind Flayer, it has the potential to significantly expand the franchise. This could open up exciting new stories, appealing to both dedicated fans and newcomers alike, and prove there’s plenty more to explore beyond the town of Hawkins.
