Why Sister Wives’ Kody Brown & Robyn Brown Are Fighting for Marriage

Kody Brown‘s love with wife of 15 years Robyn Brown is meant to be multiplied, not divided.

As Kody Brown faced the emotional pain of his marriages ending with Meri, Janelle, and Christine, his last remaining wife was there to offer comfort and support.

The father of 18 revealed on a recent episode of the TLC series that he and Robyn are working hard to save their marriage and their family. He explained they’ve been experiencing difficulties for over four years, alluding to the challenges they’ve faced throughout his three previous divorces.

He hasn’t always been the best husband during their transition from having multiple wives to just one.

Kody explained that his relationship with Robyn is strongest when he’s being authentic – when he’s courageous and compassionate.

But there are definitely moments where he’s neither.

Robyn described periods where her ex-partner is his normal self, and their relationship feels good again – they really enjoy those times with their children, Dayton, 25, Aurora, 23, Breanna, 21, Solomon, 14, and Ariella, 9. But then something triggers him, and he becomes angry and distant like he was during their divorce.

Which is why Kody included his sole remaining bride on his recent apology tour.

After talking openly with Janelle, Christine, and Meri, Kody had a moment of realization. He confessed, “I’ve apologized to everyone except you—the one person who has consistently supported me through all my mistakes, shortcomings, and emotional outbursts.”

So now it was time for him to be conciliatory.

During a date with Robyn, Kody admitted he hadn’t treated her well. He explained that while he’d apologized to Janelle, Christine, and Meri for their difficult interactions, he realized he should have apologized to her the most. He said she had always been kind and loyal, unlike the others, and he felt he owed her an apology above all others.

Namely, he shared, he was sorry he ever doubted what they shared.

He told Robyn, “We’re the ones, I’m sure of it, right?” When she confirmed she was completely certain and didn’t want him doubting their connection anymore, Kody apologized for needing to come to that realization again.

Robyn pointed out that dealing with three divorces while still legally married is incredibly confusing, and Kody agreed. He added that he needs to stop putting himself and Robyn down.

And that self-reflection is a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Robyn believes that acknowledging his role in the relationship breakdowns brought him a sense of peace and will aid his recovery. She also observed him seeming relieved after taking responsibility for his actions, as if a weight had been lifted.

And now he’s ready to rise from the ashes of those scorched relationships.

Kody described his past relationships as something like a phoenix rising from the ashes. He explained that while those times are over, he doesn’t want to erase them. Instead, he wants to learn from those experiences and carry those lessons forward into his current, fulfilling relationship with Robyn, which he describes as safe and complete.

He’s learned a lot from this difficult time, including how to rebuild and move forward. Read on to hear more about what his family has been sharing.

Oh my gosh, you guys, Janelle finally left Kody Brown – and honestly, good riddance, even if he did have those amazing abs! I was SO excited watching the new season of Sister Wives when she said she’s basically doing what Meri did – taking control of her life and moving on! It’s about time, right? I’m just thrilled for her!

Though they were married for 29 years, Kody and Christine were never legally married. Christine explained on the show’s premiere that she’d considered a ‘spiritual divorce’ years ago but didn’t know it was possible. When Meri pursued one, Christine asked her who she needed to contact to do the same.

Janelle’s former sister wife—who had previously been released from their church due to being abandoned—was glad to provide some missing information. Janelle explained, ‘She’s been helping me reconnect with everyone.’

Madison Brush is still dealing with the fallout from her father’s actions. She recently shared that she’s still hurt and finding it difficult to move past the distance between them and her dad, Kody, as they remain estranged.

Speaking candidly, the mother of four admitted she hopes her husband, Caleb Brush, will reconnect with his father. She explained she wants to mend the relationship, acknowledging her own role in the issues and expressing frustration with her ongoing struggle to manage her expectations and avoid disappointment.

She’s finding it difficult to accept him as he is. She explained that she’s working on understanding that he may not have known how to be there for her, and that he could be dealing with his own pain.

He also might not be willing to cede too much ground.

As a longtime follower, it’s heartbreaking to see everything unfold. Kody keeps saying he wants to repair things with Meri, Janelle, and especially Christine – and with all the kids, of course. But he admits they’ve reached a point where any chance of fixing things depends entirely on them deciding if and how that will happen. It feels like he’s saying he can only heal if they allow it, which is a really tough spot for everyone.

Robyn Brown, Kody’s last remaining wife, says she always desired a family, not just a relationship with Kody himself. She shared on the September 28th episode that she had received marriage proposals before – not always formal, but several men had expressed wanting to marry her quickly.

She consistently stated her intention to enter a plural marriage. She added that if Kody hadn’t already been married with three wives, she would have responded the same way to his advances.

Kody explained that, despite not planning to be exclusive, he and his partner had become a couple, saying, “It’s just you and me now.”

Though he admittedly had one concern.

Kody hinted to Robyn that he desired a more fulfilling intimate life. In a private interview, he explained his perspective: he believed polygamy offered abundance, while monogamy often left people feeling unfulfilled.

Meri is actively dating and has a clear idea of what she wants in a partner. She’s looking for a tall man who enjoys traveling, and importantly, loves dogs – she definitely doesn’t want anyone with cats! She shared this on the October 5th episode.

And she definitely needs someone who won’t scare easily.

She recounted a difficult dating experience, explaining that a man she was talking to ended the conversation as soon as he learned she practiced polygamy. He told her he wasn’t interested in continuing a relationship with someone who did, which she found very hurtful. She felt rejected simply because of her lifestyle.

Meri explained that it was the first time she truly understood that some people would be unwilling to even begin a conversation with her because of who she was.

Janelle believes she was the only one in her large family who really wanted to claim property on Coyote Pass.

On the October 3rd episode, Janelle discussed the family’s disagreements about the 14-acre property they bought before moving to Flagstaff, Arizona in 2018. She admitted she never really envisioned them all living on Coyote Pass.

From what I’ve observed, Kody’s second wife actually liked the idea of living on that property – she thought it was lovely and wondered why not! But she felt it was just a fleeting interest for Kody and the other women he was with, not a long-term plan. It seemed like a temporary whim for everyone else, rather than a serious consideration.

She explained that no one was eager to live in that area, especially not Christine. Meri would have agreed to move if everyone else had, but they didn’t.

Janelle observed that Kody and Robyn’s former property, a two-acre home with five bedrooms that they recently sold for $1.7 million, felt unfinished despite being mostly built.

Janelle explained that despite all the arguing about dividing the land into four pieces, she quickly realized after moving to Flagstaff that it wouldn’t actually happen.

Kody believes he knows why his relationships with most of his adult children (except for Robyn’s oldest, Dayton, and her daughters, Aurora and Breanna) aren’t very good.

He admitted on October 5th that he feels distant from his grown children. He explained that constant teasing and subtle jabs have created tension and damaged trust between them all.

And these days, not many of his grown kids are on Team Kody.

Even though Mykelti Padron, one of Christine’s six children, had seemed the most publicly supportive of her father, she shared her thoughts on the family split several months after she, her husband Tony Padron, and their three children moved to North Carolina.

She believes that if he simply took responsibility for his actions, at least some of his children would try to reconnect with him. Instead of constantly blaming his kids, their feelings about his new marriage, or anyone else, a simple apology and willingness to discuss his mistakes – like saying, ‘I understand I messed up. I’m sorry. Can we talk?’ – would make a huge difference, according to a fan Q&A she did in October 2024, shared on Instagram (@withoutacrystalball).

When Coyote Pass was sold in April 2025, Janelle and Meri finalized their separations from Kody and received a financial benefit as a result. Christine had previously traded her share of the land for the money she made from selling her house in Arizona.

On the October 5th episode, Janelle playfully told Meri it felt like a polite way of saying, “Goodbye, and I don’t expect to see you again.”

But she certainly wouldn’t have waved off an even nicer present.

She stated that if she had been legally married to Kody, she would have rightfully claimed half of his possessions, as they would have been considered jointly owned.

Kody and Robyn had to finalize the purchase of their new $2.1 million home before they could give up on their plans for Coyote Pass. Kody explained on the October 12th episode that selling Coyote Pass only became possible when they found a different house they really wanted.

The father of eighteen children is also looking forward to leaving behind painful memories from their old house. He explained, “We’ve gone through a lot of difficult times here, and we’re hoping for a fresh start – a completely new chapter in our lives.”

Kody believed that loving multiple wives meant he had more love to give, but he admits he didn’t spread his attention evenly between them. He explained on the October 19th episode that he found it difficult to fully commit to each wife individually, and felt they didn’t always fully support each other or him as a group.

Looking back, he realized one mistake was giving Robyn a lavish lifestyle – a $1.65 million, five-bedroom house – while his other wives had more modest living arrangements. He admitted he didn’t understand why his marriages to Meri, Janelle, and Christine ended, but he believed the house created jealousy. He felt his wives were upset that he went to such lengths to provide for Robyn’s comfort and security.

Christine found it difficult to relax around Kody. As she explained on the October 26th episode, he required a lot of attention and had many specific needs, from what he ate to his personal grooming.

Bottom line, she noted, “It was a lot.”

Janelle isn’t eager to start a new relationship anytime soon, especially after her breakup with Kody. She admitted to Christine and her husband, David Woolley, that being with Kody was exhausting, and she believes relationships in general require a lot of effort.

That’s why she’s pushing back against David’s suggestions she join FarmersOnly. She explained to the cameras, ‘David just doesn’t understand that I’m not interested in dating right now. I keep telling him, ‘No, no, no!”

Christine explained that Kody was usually careful not to accidentally call his wives by the wrong name. She shared on the November 2nd episode that there were times when hearing another wife’s name would have been particularly hurtful, but he never made that mistake. “There’s certain moments you don’t want to hear another woman’s name,” she said, “You know those moments that I’m talking about. Never happened.”

Though there were some close calls.

You know, looking back, I realize I used to fall into patterns of starting things with one idea, and then completely changing direction mid-stream. I definitely did that a lot! It was something I caught myself doing repeatedly, and I’m owning up to it now.

To hear Christine tell it, she felt quite stabbed in the kidney by her former sister wife.

She told David on the November 2nd episode that she felt deeply hurt by Robyn, explaining she’d lost all trust in her. She revealed she used to share private things with Robyn, but those conversations would often lead to problems with Kody and get her in trouble. Because of this, she stopped confiding in Robyn altogether.

But Robyn insisted she was just trying to play marriage counselor.

Christine often told me she wished Kody could see things from her perspective and understand what she was going through. I was a bit naive and thought I could help them communicate, but now I realize it would have been better to just let them handle it themselves.

Meri used to be flattered by the idea that Kody favored her among his ex-wives, but when he tried to chat over video about selling their house in Arizona, she wasn’t interested in being friendly.

He reflected on a conversation with Janelle, saying he wasn’t sure what caused the change in their relationship with Meri. He remembered helping her move to Parowan, Utah, and at the time, everything was friendly and positive. But since then, things have become strained and awkward.

Meri maintained she was only interested in business matters, especially after hearing Kody’s comments on camera in earlier seasons.

I had to be firm and set clear limits with him,” she said. “It’s frustrating when he acts like everything is okay on these video calls, especially after some of the hurtful things he’s said about me and my friends – I won’t tolerate that behavior.

Christine happily accepted her now-husband David’s proposal last year, but her ex-spouse believes he should have been consulted beforehand.

Kody explained that his youngest daughter, Truely, lives with David, and he feels he should get to know him better.

In fact, he mused, he “should have had the right, even, to discriminate David.”

Honestly, I was so thrilled for Janelle when she finally started getting her part of the Coyote Pass money back. She really wasn’t going to complain, though, about not getting reimbursed for the money she’d already given Robyn and Kody towards that big house in Arizona. She just seemed relieved to be moving forward, even if it meant taking a bit of a loss.

She explained on the November 2nd episode that her children think she should try to recover the money she invested in Robyn’s house, but she anticipates a difficult legal battle to do so.

She explained that trying to get money from Kody is difficult, because he always has a long list of excuses for why he doesn’t owe it.

He felt he’d already fulfilled his obligation to Janelle. He explained that Janelle had helped him and his wife purchase their house, and he’d taken care of that debt back in January. According to him, Janelle had even told him, sometime in January or February, that they were even and he owed her nothing more, calling it a more than fair exchange.

Should Kody still be interested in having his love multiplied, there’s no shortage of options.

I was really interested to hear Kody mention on the show that he’s still getting emails from women curious about plural marriage. He shared this with Robyn during the November 2nd episode, and it just shows how much attention this lifestyle still gets!

He told Robyn that his former wife was upset with his decision to end their plural marriage. Then, surprisingly, she offered to become part of his family with Robyn and him. He said she was both criticizing him and, at the same time, expressing interest in joining their family.

To be honest, Robyn didn’t immediately reject the idea. She later admitted she briefly thought, ‘This could actually be wonderful – it’s what I’ve always dreamed of.’ She also wondered if it would be a good fit.

Ultimately, though, it was a no.

She was upset they contacted Kody directly. She believes it’s generally considered inappropriate to pursue someone who’s already in a plural marriage – you should always approach things through his other wives.

Kody admits his strained relationship with one of his children is a major family problem, but he needs to make significant changes to improve things.

On a recent episode of the show, Janelle revealed that Maddie didn’t tell her father, Kody, about her fourth pregnancy. Janelle explained that there was no need to inform him, as they hadn’t spoken in two or three years. She added that he would eventually find out.

Janelle didn’t just want Kody as a husband; she also wanted to be part of the whole family. Meri recalled that when Janelle married Kody three years into his marriage with Meri—and after a short marriage to Meri’s brother—Janelle seemed very considerate of her feelings. According to Meri, Janelle made an effort to include her and avoid causing her pain.

Meri admitted that she felt jealous and a mix of other emotions as they navigated the challenges of trying to make plural marriage work. She also said it made her feel cherished that she was included in the process.

Meri doesn’t back down easily. However, things became complicated when her family agreed to sell Coyote Pass, the 14-acre property they bought after relocating to Arizona.

During the November 16th episode, Meri said the problem seemed to be about making sure the correct people were listed as owners on the properties. She added that she didn’t understand why the paperwork couldn’t have simply been signed and finalized.

She was also puzzled by another of Kody’s moves.

Let me tell you, dealing with this situation has been incredibly frustrating. They’re trying to blame me for delays, saying I’m the one causing the problem. But the real issue is they wanted me to sign a confidentiality agreement, and I simply wasn’t comfortable with that. It felt like they were trying to silence me, and I kept asking, ‘Why? What are you trying to hide?’ It’s just not okay to be pressured like that.

To hear Robyn tell it, though, their discussions were nothing to howl about.

Meri and I have always been able to talk openly and honestly with each other,” she said. “I was simply trying to understand what she needed, and I always want what’s best for her.

Christine says having more money has made things much easier. As a mother of six, she clearly remembers the stress of not having enough money for even basic groceries.

She explained that it’s awkward when you get to the cashier and realize you’ve spent more money than you have. Even if you try to pay with a check, it will likely be rejected, forcing you to return items to lower the total.

Other times they had to walk back plans to pay for certain essentials.

Meri explained that they used to have regular meetings – weekly or monthly – to decide which bill was the most urgent to pay. She described it as a casual discussion, like, ‘Okay, which bill do we tackle this week?’

Robyn was determined to ensure everyone received a fair share of the money from the sale of Coyote Pass. On the November 23rd episode, she explained that she insisted Kody, Janelle, Meri, and herself each get a quarter of the profits, and she didn’t hesitate to strongly disagree with Kody to make that happen. She admitted they had several heated arguments about it.

Ultimately, Kody explained that when the 14-acre property sold in April 2025, they decided to simply divide the proceeds equally – giving each person 25 percent.

As a lifestyle observer, I’ve been following the Brown family closely, and on the latest episode, Janelle really hit on something interesting. She didn’t explicitly say Kody had a mid-life crisis, but she definitely pointed out that things changed for him around his milestone birthday. It was like a switch flipped, and she feels something fundamentally shifted in his behavior and priorities.

By the time Kody turned 50, he was married to his fourth wife, Robyn, and began complaining about the burden of supporting the entire family. Janelle explained that he seemed to believe Robyn was his true soulmate and that keeping up four marriages had become too much for him.

But Kody took issue with the idea that he didn’t put in the work.

He firmly stated that he’d always stepped up and fulfilled his duties within the family. He consistently gave his all, but felt like his efforts weren’t being reciprocated by other family members.

Okay, so he said it himself! Apparently, dealing with three divorces really hit him hard. He joked that it was like all of them were going through menopause at the same time – and he actually believes men have menopause too! He thinks his testosterone just plummeted and he just…lost the drive to fight for things anymore. It’s honestly so sad, but also…it just makes me love him even more, you know? It’s so raw and real!

When Janelle Brown’s mother, Sheryl Usher, first found out her daughter was considering plural marriage, she initially tried to intervene. Janelle explained that her mom “came to save me from the polygamists” because she didn’t want her daughter involved in what she saw as a dangerous group. However, in a surprising turn of events, Sheryl ended up marrying Kody Brown’s father, Winn Brown, just three months before Janelle and Kody tied the knot in October 1992.

Their marriage definitely added a layer of complexity to the family. Janelle admitted she initially thought it would be difficult to understand, but she accepted it. It felt a little strange at first, but ultimately she was glad to have another person to share things with.

Ysabel Brown says she wishes she’d had more one-on-one time with her father, Kody. On a recent episode of the show, she explained that she and her dad aren’t particularly close.

Ysabel explained that her mom is wonderful at being both a mother and a father, and her stepdad, David, is also great.

Despite everything, Ysabel didn’t want to say her relationship with Kody was broken. “He’s still my dad, and I love him,” she explained.

Though Janelle still feels the family had something special, that spark wasn’t apparent early on.

Okay, so looking back, especially in the beginning, it really hurt me that he didn’t always have my back. It felt like he’d automatically side with someone else, and honestly, it was about Meri and me, and it just… it stung. Plus, we were both dealing with so much jealousy and insecurity, and it all just created this really awful situation. I just wish he’d fought for us a little more, you know?

Janelle Brown became pregnant with her first child, Logan, less than a year after marrying Kody. Because Kody was often away for work as a traveling salesman, Janelle felt she had to prioritize keeping things calm and ended up losing touch with who she was as an individual.

If Kody wants to have a good relationship with Meri after their split, he needs to get along with her friends. He helped her move after they separated, hoping they could remain amicable – as he explained on a recent show. However, he was disappointed to find her friends were openly critical of him.

He explained that he confronted her directly over the phone, telling her to ask her friends to stop talking. He admitted to scolding her friends, and believes she was deeply hurt by it.

Kody explained that conversations with his ex-wife often quickly became heated and impossible. He said they never learned to handle conflict during their marriage, and if they want to have any kind of relationship going forward, they’ll need to find a way to manage those explosive moments.

Even though Christine and Kody are no longer married, they’re still related by family. As Christine explained in late December, they’re actually third cousins once removed, which is a legally recognized relationship.

Janelle explained that the family often joked about a connection between two people, even though they were very distantly related. She believes this kind of thing happens frequently in polygamous families. It wasn’t a close relationship where they’d see each other at gatherings—they were very distant cousins, if cousins at all. It was just a result of living in a small, interconnected community.
