There’s a buzz about a possible sequel to the recent Fantastic Four movie! Despite not being a huge financial success, Marvel is reportedly considering Fantastic Four 2 after the Avengers: Secret Wars film. The first movie, currently available on Disney+, launched Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it came out on July 25, 2025, and earned $521.9 million worldwide.
Fantastic Four 2 likely to happen in Phase 7
According to a new report, Marvel Studios is already planning a second Fantastic Four movie, potentially releasing it after Avengers: Secret Wars. They’re hoping to bring back Matt Shakman, who directed the first film, to direct the sequel. Marvel also thinks featuring the Fantastic Four in both the ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ movies will build excitement for their next solo adventure.
According to insider MyTimetoShineHello, Marvel is still planning a sequel to the Fantastic Four movie, even though the first one didn’t perform exceptionally well at the box office. They reportedly want director Matt Shakman to return for Fantastic Four 2, which would take place after Secret Wars. Marvel believes the team will play a significant role in future Avengers films, boosting interest in the sequel.
In June 2025, Variety announced that a follow-up to “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” was being planned, with a potential release in 2028. This aligns with earlier rumors. Two months later, Jeff Sneider, a well-known industry source, reported on his podcast, The InSneider, that Marvel expects the sequel to be more successful than the original, especially considering the Fantastic Four’s roles in the upcoming “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” films.
Currently, a release date for Fantastic Four 2 hasn’t been set, and the movie’s plot is still unknown.
I was reading an interview with Eric Pearson, who worked on the story and script for the first movie, and he admitted he’s as in the dark about the sequel as the rest of us! He said he really needs to see how things shake out after ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ before any meaningful planning can begin. He did have a few thoughts, but he emphasized that none of it really matters until we know what’s happened to the Fantastic Four after those big events.
Pearson admitted a murder mystery or time travel adventure featuring the characters would be fun. However, he cautioned against making drastic changes. He believes any further story decisions are premature until they see how the characters fare in the upcoming conflict with Victor von Doom.
