Sega has consistently updated its kart racer, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, with new content since launch, including both free and paid characters like Joker from Persona 5 and the popular virtual singer Hatsune Miku. According to creative director Masaru Kobayakawa in a recent Famitsu interview, players can expect even more surprises coming to the game in 2026.
In an interview with a Japanese publication, as part of a series featuring over 150 developers, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds producer Kobayakawa revealed plans for new content releases throughout 2026. Sega aims to make next year full of surprises for players.
Kobayakawa announced the release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in September 2025. He stated that the game has been well-received globally, building on over 30 years of racing game experience since Sega Rally. They plan to continue supporting the game throughout 2026 and have many exciting new additions planned, aiming to deliver a year full of surprises for players.
Released in September, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has received multiple updates and downloadable content packs since launch. Sega announced in October that the game had sold over one million copies and celebrated by adding Joker, the main character from Persona 5, as a free playable racer. This update also included three new songs: “Take Over”, “Wake Up, Get Up Get Out There”, and “Victory”.
Sega has added a variety of characters to the game, including some available for free like Hatsune Miku and Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza series. A paid season pass unlocks even more characters, such as those from Minecraft and SpongeBob SquarePants. Sega plans to continue adding characters through crossovers, with Pac-Man, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Avatar: The Last Airbender characters confirmed for release in 2026. Future free characters will be revealed as surprises.
Adding characters from other franchises is a good way to expand the roster in the kart racing game, but Sonic franchise head Takashi Iizuka confirmed in July that these guest characters won’t have any spoken lines. He explained that voice acting is limited to the 24 characters originally from the Sonic universe due to licensing restrictions. However, players have noticed that even DLC characters owned by Sega, like the pre-order bonus Werehog, also lack voice lines.
