The finale of Game of Thrones sparked a lot of debate, but that doesn’t mean the story is over. HBO is already working on several prequel shows, like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and is even considering other continuations. They previously attempted a sequel focusing on Jon Snow, though that project was cancelled, showing they’re open to exploring many different paths for the future of the series.
Could the projects currently in development at HBO actually function as a ninth season of Game of Thrones? It’s definitely a possibility. George R.R. Martin recently announced that HBO is working on both sequels and prequels to Game of Thrones, but details are scarce. These could simply be shows taking place after the original series, and there’s no guarantee anything will come of them. However, combined with comments from one of the show’s actors, it seems more likely. Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark, told The Direct she wouldn’t rule out returning for a sequel.
It’d take a lot to get me back to that role (laughs). While it would be incredible to revisit it, I was really satisfied with how Sansa’s story concluded in Game of Thrones – more than most other characters, it seemed. I feel like I got a good ending for her, so I’m hesitant to go back. It could be fantastic, or it could ruin the special feeling it had. I’d need to read a script to even consider it.
Could A Game of Thrones Sequel With Sansa Stark Work?

As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I totally get what Turner’s saying. Honestly, any sequel or spin-off – no matter who it’s about – needs to have a really compelling story. That’s why the Jon Snow project fell apart, and it’s the biggest hurdle for anything else, like a ninth season. I think it’s especially true for Sansa’s story. She actually got a pretty fantastic ending, and revisiting that feels risky – they could easily ruin what was such a satisfying conclusion for her character.
However, Sansa becoming Queen in the North isn’t without potential difficulties. She could face rebellions from kingdoms like the Iron Islands, or entirely new threats to the North, or even the entire realm. It would also be fascinating to see how she governs and what the future holds for House Stark. Creating a story focused solely on her would be tricky, though, as it would require addressing what happens to all the other characters and would essentially need a full season of television to do it justice.
Because of this, any future stories would likely be more successful if they explored a different path. If HBO wants to revive a beloved character, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) would be a better option than revisiting old ground. Her journey westward offers a natural starting point for new adventures, characters, and challenges, and wouldn’t require bringing back familiar faces from the original series, as it would take place in a completely new setting.
If revisiting the past isn’t ideal, another approach would be to set the story far in the future, when characters like King Bran, Queen Sansa, and Jon Snow are figures of myth and legend. This would offer more creative freedom, avoiding the expectation of trying to correct the issues with Season 8, even though it would be wonderful to see Sophie Turner reprise her role as Sansa.
Game of Thrones is available to stream on HBO Max.
