Batman/Green Arrow/The Question: Arcadia #2 Is an Exciting Thriller (Review)

As someone who grew up loving comics, I always think back to the ’80s as a golden age. That’s when creators really started pushing boundaries, telling stories that were complex and dealt with real-world issues – DC Comics was especially great at that. And the new series, Batman/Green Arrow/The Question: Arcadia, feels like a direct throwback to that era. It’s a really gripping thriller about Batman, Green Arrow, and the Question getting caught up in a corporation’s plan to build a futuristic city as a way to save humanity. Issue #2 really cranks up the tension and takes the story to a fantastic, intense level.

Following up on the excellent first issue, Batman/Green Arrow/The Question: Arcadia #2 delivers a compelling continuation of the story. The first issue laid the groundwork, and this one brings the conflict to a head. Writer and artist Gabriel Hardman truly shines in his portrayal of the characters, each feeling integral to the narrative. The Question acts as a gritty, street-level detective, while Green Arrow passionately challenges the powerful elite. Batman, as always, strives to uphold order, but with a healthy dose of skepticism. Like many classic DC comics from the 1980s, this series skillfully blends relevant social themes with iconic superheroes, and Hardman clearly understands what made those stories so impactful.

Rated: 4.5 out of 5

Pros Cons
Great pacing that gives the story a nice rhythm, allowing readers to breath after big scenes “Evil rich guy with a hidden agenda” is a cliche that works for this story, but is a cliche nonetheless
Exciting action scenes from beginning to end
Hardman nails the characters, each of them to fitting the story to a tee

One of the book’s strengths is its excellent pacing. The story begins slowly, introducing the premise before diving into the main events. It then alternates between moments of quiet development and fast-paced action, building steadily towards a thrilling conclusion. This keeps you completely engaged and eager to discover what happens next as the truth unfolds.

This issue unfolds with one surprising revelation after another. It also excels at bringing new readers up to speed – even if you haven’t read the first issue, you’ll quickly become invested in the story and learn everything you need to know as it progresses. It’s refreshing because the writer doesn’t assume prior knowledge, making it very accessible for newcomers.

Hardman’s Art Fits the Story Like a Glove

This story feels like a classic DC tale, reminiscent of stories like Swamp Thing’s “American Gothic.” It uses real-world issues – in this case, the wealthy attempting to solve problems for their own gain – as the basis for its narrative. This approach naturally lends itself to a darker, more realistic tone, which Hardman’s artwork perfectly captures. The book opens with a striking image of the city’s downtrodden workers, beautifully rendered by Hardman and colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr., despite the grim subject matter. The story quickly moves into an exciting action sequence that’s visually dynamic and well-paced, showcasing Hardman’s skill in page layout and enhancing the overall impact.

The artwork is incredibly detailed, and Fajardo Jr.’s coloring brings each scene to life. This is especially impressive because the comic is dark and doesn’t rely on bright colors. Usually, that can make details harder to see, but Fajardo Jr. avoids that problem. The characters are also very expressive – you can easily understand their emotions, which makes the dialogue more impactful. Hardman and Fajardo Jr. work wonderfully together as an art team, and their talent truly elevates an already strong story.

Batman/Green Arrow/The Question: Arcadia #2 delivers everything fans love about DC Comics. The story is compelling and relevant, the pacing is perfect, and the artwork is stunning. This detective story truly showcases the strengths of Batman, Green Arrow, and the Question, and their team-up elevates it even further. It’s a great example of what makes the Black Label so successful—allowing creators to tell unique stories. This book is dark and intense in the best way, making it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
