We Bury The Dead’s Brenton Thwaites on Zombies, Nightwing & Pirates of the Caribbean [Exclusive]

Brenton Thwaites has faced supernatural threats before, including haunted mirrors in Oculus, angry ghosts in Ghosts of War, and even silly, bloody zombies in Office Uprising. Now, in We Bury the Dead, he’s battling zombies again, this time after a military experiment goes wrong and wipes out half a million people in Tasmania.

After the disaster, a young American woman named Ava (Daisy Ridley) volunteers to identify the bodies, hoping to find out if her husband was among those killed. However, she soon discovers that some of the deceased are mysteriously coming back to life. She teams up with Clay (Thwaites), a seemingly casual man who joins the effort almost out of curiosity. Even though Thwaites is familiar with horror movies, he admits dealing with actual reanimated corpses is far more frightening than he expected.

Thwaites raved about the film’s makeup and special effects, calling the team ‘phenomenal.’ He noted that all the effects were done practically, and shared a funny story about bringing his kids to set. Unfortunately, they chose a day with a particularly scary contortionist in full zombie makeup who chased them down the street! It was a memorable visit – perhaps too memorable – as his kids haven’t wanted to return to a film set since his work on Titans.

He added that the project was fantastic. While the genre is very competitive, this one stood out with its gradual, emotional unfolding and thrilling moments, all set outdoors in a real town. He particularly enjoyed the large-scale scenes filmed on location.

So, Clay decides to swipe a motorcycle, and the two of us – me as a fan, watching this unfold – hit the road. They’re heading through this really dangerous, quarantined area, all so Ava can finally find some peace. Honestly, they’re both pretty down, so I guess they figured they might as well be miserable together – they just get each other, you know?

Thwaites explains that the characters’ initial connection in the first act is purely coincidental. From there, it evolves into a silent understanding. He appreciates that their meeting isn’t intentional—they’re brought together by chance, and have no prior desire to be together. It’s a forced connection, making their relationship all the more compelling as they seem like an unlikely pair.

He explains that the characters’ meeting is coincidental, and that they influence each other. By the film’s end, you see how each character helps the other grow and understand themselves better. The story culminates in a quiet, personal realization for one of the characters – something small, like learning to forgive – which he finds particularly satisfying.

Beyond his work in horror, Brenton Thwaites is well-known for his role as Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing, in the HBO Max series Titans. The show followed Dick’s journey from Batman’s partner, Robin, to becoming the independent hero Nightwing and leading a team of superpowered individuals called the Titans. With DC Studios now led by James Gunn and Peter Safran developing a new live-action version of the Titans, fans are wondering if Thwaites might return, either as Nightwing or in another role.

Look, I’ll be honest, I haven’t been following everything happening with the DC Universe lately. But even as an outsider, I’ve always been a fan of Dick Grayson. There’s something really unique about that character, and it’s clear the fans absolutely adore him. So, would I revisit the role? Absolutely, I’d love to. It’s tough to say if it’ll happen, though – a lot of things need to align. It’s definitely something I’ve thought about.

Brenton Thwaites previously appeared as Henry Turner, Will Turner’s son (played by Orlando Bloom), in the 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. With rumors of a new Pirates movie circulating, Thwaites immediately expressed his eagerness to return to the role, saying, “I’ll do it!”
