The new year starts strong for anime fans with a fantastic lineup of shows premiering in January 2026. This season is shaping up to be one of the best in a long time, featuring both highly anticipated returns like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, as well as a host of new series. Crunchyroll will be streaming dozens of shows weekly, and some, including the unexpectedly popular Sentenced to Be a Hero, are already available.
While Crunchyroll doesn’t usually announce its anime releases far in advance, Netflix consistently provides a clear monthly schedule. Netflix has become increasingly involved in anime production as the industry rapidly expands, offering both brand new stories and bringing back popular classic series. So far this January, viewers can enjoy releases like Detective Conan (Collection 3), Pokémon Horizons: Season 3—Rising Hope (Part 1), and Shiboyugi: Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table (Season 1). And according to What’s on Netflix, there are still six more anticipated anime series set to premiere on the platform this January.
4) Gintama (Season 1)

I remember when Gintama first came out as an anime over 20 years ago – it quickly became a fan favorite! Now, on January 15th, 2026, it’s finally hitting Netflix. For those who don’t know, it’s based on Hideaki Sorachi’s manga from Weekly Shonen Jump, and over the years there have been multiple seasons and movies. What’s amazing is that it’s still incredibly popular – people just can’t get enough of Gintoki Sakata and his friends and their crazy everyday lives. Initially, Netflix is launching with just the first season, but hopefully they’ll add more later on.
3) Magic Knight: Rayearth (Season 1)

Anime fans have a lot to look forward to on January 15th, when a popular action-fantasy series will become available on the streaming service. Originally released in 1994, this beloved anime is widely considered a classic of the Shojo genre. The story centers around three high school students who are transported to another world after answering a distress call. There, they discover they are Magic Knights and must train their abilities to protect the world.
2) Love Through a Prism (Season 1)

A new anime romance will premiere exclusively on Netflix starting January 15, 2026. The story is penned by Yoko Kamio, the popular manga artist behind hits like Boys Over Flowers, Cat Street, and Matsuri Special. The anime is set in the 1990s and follows Lili Ichijouin as she leaves Japan to study at the prestigious Saint Thomas Art Academy in London. While pursuing her dream of becoming an artist, she encounters Kit Church, a talented student with a mysterious past.
1) Cosmic Princess Kaguya! (2026)

Coming out on January 26, 2026, Cosmic Princess Kaguya is a new movie based on the classic Japanese story The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. It marks the first time Shingo Yamashita—known for directing the exciting opening scenes of anime like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and Chainsaw Man—has directed a full film. The movie tells the story of two girls who connect through music as they perform in the fantastical virtual world of Tsukuyomi.
