Last year, Nintendo added classic GameCube games to its Nintendo Switch Online service, but only for owners of the newer Nintendo Switch 2 console. Players with the original Nintendo Switch, even those paying for the subscription service, can’t play these games—and honestly, there aren’t many available yet. Plus, a significant performance issue with the GameCube games persists, despite Nintendo releasing an update that fans hoped would resolve it.
Nintendo released an update for GameCube games on the Nintendo Switch Online service late last year, and many hoped it would resolve the frustrating input lag issues. However, recent testing shows the problem unfortunately still exists.
GameCube Games on Switch 2 Still Have a Big Problem
A recent video by YouTuber Madeo Joestar shows that the input lag problem with GameCube games on the Switch 2 hasn’t been resolved. In fact, it’s almost three times worse than on the original GameCube. This is especially noticeable in fast-paced games like F-Zero GX if you’re familiar with how they should play. Surprisingly, some games, such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, seem to suffer even more lag for reasons that aren’t clear.
Nintendo hasn’t officially addressed the issue, so it’s unknown if they’re working on a solution. Players who tried GameCube games when the Switch 2 launched noticed the problem right away. It’s strange because it only affects GameCube titles and the emulator Nintendo is using to run them. Interestingly, fan-made emulators don’t have this issue, making it even more puzzling. This problem could potentially push back the release of the next console, currently believed to be a Nintendo DS successor. Some sources say DS support will arrive this year, while others suggest 2027.
