Mare of Easttown season 2 gets major production update from Kate Winslet

When HBO’s drama Mare of Easttown came out in 2021, it was very well-received. The creators stated at the time that it was designed as a one-time story and wouldn’t have a second season.

Kate Winslet has repeatedly stated that the show is over, describing it as “done, dusted, finished.” In an interview with Deadline, she explained she’d only consider reprising her role as Marianne ‘Mare’ Sheehan if the script was truly exceptional. Winslet noted that filming was demanding for everyone involved, including the show’s creator and writer, Brad Ingelsby, and that the entire team was emotionally and physically drained, especially given the challenges of filming during the Covid-19 pandemic. She emphasized that a return to the role would only happen if the story was compelling enough to warrant it, and Brad Ingelsby feels the same way.

It looks like the show might be renewed! Kate Winslet recently mentioned to the same publication that a second season is likely to premiere in 2027.

While editing her first film, Goodbye June – now streaming on Netflix – she mentioned there were discussions about potentially returning to the role she played in Mare of Easttown last year.

She said they had real discussions about when it might be feasible. She added that this was the first time she’d felt confident they would actually move forward with it.

Okay, so it’s looking like we’re going to be waiting a little longer for this one. Kate Winslet mentioned it’s probably going to be 2027 before they actually start filming, which is a bit of a bummer for those of us who are really excited!

I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news about whether Mare of Easttown might come back, and what a potential second season would look like. Recently, Mark Ruffalo hinted that his show, Task – also created by Brad Ingelsby and set in the same region – could actually connect to the Mare story. It’s exciting to think those worlds might collide!

I was reading an interview with Mark Ruffalo, and he mentioned that there’s a possibility the shows could crossover at some point. He stressed that it’s just talk right now and nothing is confirmed, but the idea is definitely being considered!

Mare of Easttown takes place in a made-up town in Pennsylvania and centers on Mare, played by Kate Winslet, as she investigates a young mother’s murder while also dealing with personal struggles.

In 2023, Julianne Nicholson, who played Lori on the show, said she wasn’t actively expecting a second season. However, she confirmed she’d happily return if asked, and hinted that a continuation of the series wasn’t out of the question.
