Microsoft may integrate Copilot Chat directly into the File Explorer on Windows 11 next

A hidden button has been discovered in the File Explorer app within recent preview versions of Windows 11. While it doesn’t do anything yet – it only appears when you move your mouse over empty space in the top navigation bar – tech enthusiasts following the Windows Insider program are already trying to figure out its purpose.

A new button seems to be connected to Copilot, as discovered by @phantomofearth. Recent preview versions of Windows 11 include references to a “Chat with Copilot” feature, and also allow users to separate the Copilot window from File Explorer.

Okay, so I’ve heard about this new button coming to File Explorer and I’m really curious! From what I understand, it’ll probably open up a Copilot window – maybe a sidebar or a pop-up – where I can actually *talk* to Copilot about whatever file I have selected. Imagine being able to ask it questions about a document or even photos, right within File Explorer! There’s a preview floating around that shows what it might look like, and it seems pretty cool.

You can already use Copilot with File Explorer in a simple way. Right-click on any file, and you’ll see an “Ask Copilot” option. Clicking this opens the Copilot app in a new window, letting you ask questions about the file you selected.

Using Copilot hasn’t always felt smooth within File Explorer. This new, hidden button could indicate that Microsoft is working on a better, more connected Copilot experience directly within File Explorer on Windows 11, making it easier for frequent users.

Microsoft is experimenting with a new Copilot button within File Explorer, but it’s not working yet in the current preview versions of Windows 11. Keep in mind that this feature isn’t confirmed and may be altered or removed before the final release, as it’s still under development.
