Marvel Studios Calls It Quits With Long-Delayed MCU Movie (Report)

According to reports, Marvel Studios is abandoning the Blade movie and is planning to develop a different blockbuster film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead. While Marvel successfully released all the projects announced at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con by the end of 2022, Blade remained unfinished. After nearly seven years of development, the film has gone through two directors, six writers, and numerous delays, ultimately leading to its removal from Disney’s release schedule.

I was listening to The Hot Mic podcast, and Jeff Sneider said something pretty shocking – he’s absolutely sure that Blade as a standalone movie is completely off the table at Marvel. Apparently, instead of getting his own film, Mahershala Ali’s Blade will first appear in this Midnight Sons movie they’ve been talking about for ages – the one that’s supposed to be all about supernatural heroes.

There haven’t been many updates about the movie Blade lately. Reports last summer indicated the project was temporarily stopped, even though Marvel Studios is still interested in having Mahershala Ali play the vampire hunter.

The future of the Midnight Sons project is uncertain. However, Marvel Studios was reportedly looking for a new writer by July 2025 to take over from Michael Green, who previously worked on Logan and Death on the Nile.

There’s been speculation that Ali’s Blade might lead the Midnight Sons team, and this could end up being her official introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead of a standalone project.

Midnight Sons Is the Perfect Solution to Marvel’s Blade Problem

For a while, fans worried that actor Mahershala Ali, now 51, might be getting too old to continue playing Blade. However, with Pedro Pascal – only a year younger – recently landing a major role as Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, those concerns now seem unfounded.

The main question is whether this acclaimed actor will be as enthusiastic about leading a team in a Midnight Sons project as he was about playing Blade. However, if the studio quickly establishes his character in a combined project, it could be easier to get a solo movie for him made in the future.

Following Blade’s mysterious encounter with Dane Whitman in Eternals, a Midnight Sons team-up feels like a logical next step. Marvel could position Blade as a leader, similar to Nick Fury, bringing together supernatural heroes like Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, and Elsa Bloodstone. Their mission? To confront Sacha Baron Cohen’s Mephisto, who recently appeared in Ironheart.

Marvel Studios seems to be moving forward with plans for Midnight Sons, reportedly having hired a writer. They’re looking to integrate this team into the next major phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout the current Multiverse Saga, Marvel has had difficulty consistently featuring its supernatural characters, and Midnight Sons could be the project to finally address that.
